    Hey all!

I've gotten these error codes and my heat isn't working. The mechanic didn't do a thorough check and based on the codes just said I need a new catalytic converter. Does it make sense the heat isn't working and is it likely the only solution is a new catalytic converter?

Obviously it's an old car and if the repair is $2k+, I'm not sure I would replace the catalytic converter. Any suggestions? TIA

I'm thinking not so much The catalytic converters that I've bought don't have anything to do with the heat they're not connected to the water jacket it's a thing above it or whatever and that's not with the converter I don't believe now I got to go look But anyway I wouldn't think so I would think no heat I would be looking at my codes and see if you have a code for the three-way heat valve something along those lines or a non-functioning heater core for some reason stopped up whatever I can't imagine haven't seen any of this yet but I do know when the coolant control valve are the three-way valve is acting up he can be affected it very speeds if not all across the board Good luck

The coolant flow control valve, on the other hand, can absolutely be the reason your heat doesn't work.

Sometimes the catalytic converter error code can be due to a bad tank of gas... So clear the code after a fresh tank of gas and see if it comes back. As for the heater, that's an entirely different system/diagnosis.

Do your coolant flow valve first to get heat and worry about the cat second.

A genuine gen2 cat is $1400 plus shipping and tax from an online Toyota dealer.

If you were in a non “carb” state an aftermarket Walker for $400 has worked for many.

    For clarification it's a 2008 with 105,000 miles that I've had for 4 years.

Thank you! I'll look into the alternative. Is it better to get a genuine gen2 cat from Toyota itself?

Thank you! I added some coolant and will clear everything after a new tank of gas. Crossing my fingers it'll work.

In states like NY and Calif you almost have to use OEM to pass inspection. Both cats mentioned should clear the cat code. I would check with your inspection people first, eg “if cat code has cleared and the emissions test has completed, is that good enough or do I also need Oem parts?”

He's in New York it looks like so I think he can get away with non OEM but the lights have to be off etc It's possible I could be wrong but I think New York is like that.

Still might want to fix the coolant control valve so there can be heat.

After going for a diagnostic at Toyota, the catalytic converter code disappeared so it seems replacing the coolant control valve should fix the issue & clear the code.

How much is a normal cost for a Coolant Control Valve replacement?

I don't know I usually grab them off other cars they're like you know $20 at the junkyard I think a new one might be 60 bucks or something It's not a very costly part If you're going to be in the car for God knows how long and it's something you don't want it worry about for a long time by the new one I have so many cars and so many of these cars are winding up in tow lots now with all this stuff already replaced and the one last repair that comes up breaks the camel's back for the people and so these cars show up in the tow lot with everything replaced except for the last repair that broke the camel's back so there's always these kind of antics and you know Prius people they junk the car with every receipt and every piece of paperwork in the glove box All you got to do is pull it out and read and see that the people that replaced every stinking thing on the car except for the last problem which is why the cars sitting where it is actually works out quite well for me I just got a battery the other day that looks like it was replaced couple weeks ago brand new they just left it in the car connected and sent it to the tow lot looks like a bunch of parts who replaced on the car in the last year so now I have the whole car and all the parts $500.
