It's not the ball joints because I already replaced those. I even replaced the lower control arms. Got new shocks and struts. There's some rattling inside the rack. When I go over potholes. It started after spending a year in New York City with the car. Is there a way of tightening this like a lash adjustment or is it needing a new rack?
There used to be a big hex adjusting nut that adjusted the sea washer or c looking piece of metal against the rack and it's lubrication inside I think that's been taken away now It's no longer on the Toyota racks The place where it goes is there you can see it's a big oh I don't know 27 mm or something whole or it would be a hole The land is there where the hole would be drilled but there's nothing drilled and then on later models the casting has been changed doesn't even show where that point would be so I think the adjustment is gone.
I have this exact issue, on 2 of my gen2 prius. 2005 and 2008. I have not figured out what the cause is, the steering is nice and tight so it's not a problem with the intermediate shaft. I hope someone can get to the bottom of this
For me it was this: Slack in steering column (rattling noise) | PriusChat That fix has lasted exactly a year so far according to the date on the last post. There's also videos of people who've had a bad 'power steering damper' (part # 45254-28040)
I looked this part up for the 2nd gen cars, it's showing not compatible. Maybe just for the 3rd gen.....
