I recently went on a vacation to Cambodia and Vietnam. OMG, the streets of Cambodia are overflowing with gen2 Prius!! When we got picked up from the airport in Phnom Penh and the car was a gen2 Prius, I was really excited - like hey this is my car! I suddenly felt at home in this very foreign country. But then later that day, our next ride was in a gen2 Prius. Then I started looking around and noticing that like every 3rd car was a Prius. Mostly gen2, occasionally gen3. Nothing newer than that. See the attached random photo I took that has 3 gen2s in it. This was typical. After awhile, it became a little creepy, like a horror movie! Of course, I started to wonder, why are there so many of these cars here? Remember 15 years ago in the USA when there were so many new Prius cars driving around? They were so popular back then. Do you want to know what happened to those cars? Are they in the junkyard? No, apparently many of them were exported to Cambodia, and that's where they all are now. Crazy!
Yep, and you get AC + protected from the rain showers. Unlike the tuk-tuks I rode in when I was there about 15 years ago. Affordable, reliable and comparable to the mileage of those tuk-tuks.
Yes I get queried by people all the time from those countries here for parts and various and sundry things quite interesting anytime I go to these Asian countries these cars are in abundance before that Volkswagens and things bugs etc
Back when they were selling 25K Gen2 Prius a month in the US for years and years it inevitably led to overseas investors buying much of all that used inventory on US roads because in the US people spend a fortune on the newest vehicles rather than stay loyal to what they already got.
This made me chuckle, and I can totally see how comforting it'd feel to get into your own car in a foreign country. I visited Siem Reap many moons ago, and it was life affirming.
