After upgrading all the bus bars and nuts today on my battery pack, I decided to take a look at the fan and clean it if needed. Couldnt find my can of compressed air so used a toothbrush.
Also besides the filter I already added some time ago on the outside of the vent. I found out about another one and wanted to see if I could add it, it was also said that it is not found in all models so I wasnt to surprised mine didnt have it. Some sites will say it fits 2010-2015 but it did not really fit my 2010 but I made it work. Now the fan is clean and has two filters to help keep it clean.
I went ahead and got the correct HV fan ducting for the internal filter hidden inside. Most would not clean it or even know it was there once they started using them. The filter fits correctly on the updated fan ducting. Now my filter addition to the ducting that was in my car but did not completely seal the ducting is complete as intended. Very easy to clean as the updated ducting I ordered the filter was very dirty, they could have cleaned it very easy and got more money as I got it for a cheaper price than they usually are. These are images of the updated ducting with filter. Then I will upload images of the old ducting with updated filter but has gaps and will not filter as it should. After that I will upload images of the updated ducting installed. In the end this is an updated fan ducting with updated internal filter coupled with an exterior added filter in the interior cabin
This is thd old ducting with updated filter. Does not cover all the areas. On the right side of the filter there is a big gap versus it being sealed like they wanted it to be. Sealed ok on the bottom and left side but the top and area on the right were wide open.
I tied some household bug screen to the inside of the entrance grill. Coming off a roll it had a bow to it; I placed it so that the bow was away from the middle of the grill, then pulled that bow into contact at a couple of locations along the vertical centre, with thin wire, like a twist-tie, makes it seat in uniform contact.
Updated ducting installation. My custom two stage HV fan filtration system. On the backend is a set of three little fans inside the exhaust ducting that are powered by usb from the solar roof modification that charges the 12v I did. These little fans help with the heat soak that happens after you shut down the car after a long drive. Lastly I would control the fan to run higher through an app or other device available.
Did you take any pictures that we can see? Good to see people come up with ideas to extend the life of the HV battery.
Nice job on your little filter mod. See how it is hard to see, most would miss an OEM filter inside and not clean it. You could always add the exterior OEM filter and then you would have a double filtered fan duct.
Strangely, I can’t remember cleaning it in forever. I’m pretty sure I’ve run a vacuum with bristle brush attachment over it once or twice. Or it’s simply not that effective, not sure. I have cleaned the fan a couple of times; wasn’t much build-up. We’re not driving a lot, and our northwest climate not that dusty.
