Repeating "whiirr-whiirr, whiirr-whiirr..." sound?

    From time to time I hear a repetitive "whiirr-whiirr, whiirr-whiirr, whiirr-whiirr..." sound from the left side, under the hood of the car. It sounds like a small, geared motor: a louder and coarser version of the window motor sound. What is this?

    It most likely is a failing 3 way coolant valve. It'll get much louder if you open the hood when you notice this sound next time.
