The extension of the tax cuts that just passed will add over $4 trillion to the debt.
Cutting federal programs and tariffs will not cover that.

How bad has the US education system become, when the majority vote for tariffs, thinking they are a tax on someone else? Basic economic theory was taught in high school, back when I went.

Interesting. So if country X invokes tariffs against USA & it works for country X, it doesn't work for USA to do the same.

Hill, there is nothing reciprocal with Trump's tariffs. He ripped up perfectly good trade agreements and is 'negotiating' with threats and bullying. This is not how other countries do business. Well, maybe Russia....

When Does Federal Debt Reach Unsustainable Levels? — Penn Wharton Budget Model
    • "Under current policy, the United States has about 20 years for corrective action after which no amount of future tax increases or spending cuts could avoid the government defaulting on its debt whether explicitly or implicitly (i.e., debt monetization producing significant inflation). Unlike technical defaults where payments are merely delayed, this default would be much larger and would reverberate across the U.S. and world economies.
    • This time frame is the “best case” scenario for the United States, under markets conditions where participants believe that corrective fiscal actions will happen ahead of time. If, instead, they started to believe otherwise, debt dynamics would make the time window for corrective action even shorter."
(Updates to this well respected study done by a renowned School of Economics have adjusted this prediction to a much shorter time frame)

Yes something has to be done, unfortunately the party that was NOT getting it done (instead choosing to add 10, 15 million to the welfare rolls or teachers that were bilingual to deal with increasing overcrowded public classrooms to handle the influx, & pay for hotel accommodations with housing shortages already maxed out) are now fighting the party that's at least trying. But the opposition would rather push insurmountable fear mongering as a pissible solution (to at please get their power back). Or at best say we need to do things but do it slower.
    Personally IDK .

But adding four trillion to it for tax breaks you can't cover, that's four-dimensional chess?

How are these tariffs going to help with that?

I see your logic is that the country is already bankrupt; so, why don’t we let a know-nothing unhinged tyrant to do whatever extreme things he wants, with little input from experts.

My question wasn't political. Just looking for an explanation on how these tariffs or extending temporary tax cuts are responsible fiscal behavior.

I would happily do without the TCJA if they also keep the current SALT deduction limit.
I suspect that's REALLY what most of the FUD is about.
Before TCJA, the SALT deduction was unlimited, and the TCJA's SALT provision will expire after 2025 without action from Congress.

I would accept the pain of the lower standard deduction that myself and 90 percent of 'Mericans avail themselves with if we ALSO no longer have to subsidize states with unreasonable spending habits...... ;)

    ... it's fun to lie. Isn't it?

Things are so bad, here in America, it has its first April day of springtime dedicated, to lying. Not one red-pill day of the year have we, here in America dedicated, to truth telling.

The question of the day: Why do people lie?

My father was an accomplished liar. He played people, like a fiddle. Hot shot Ph.D, top gun physicist, he had his mendacity boiled down, to a ratio. He subsequently became a fabulously wealthy man. I refused to live my life that way. You always (ALWAYS) get the straight scoop, from me. I never (NEVER) lie.

    I'm the only one who doesn't -
