I don't think many Canadians will be buying even if they were almost giving them away.

Yeah, Tesla is already quite unpopular right now in Canada (and elsewhere in the world).

And yet they are still turning a profit. Kind of flies in the face of what some say. I guess leftist extremists better pick up the pace & set more stores on fire & randomly shoot into the buildings - people inside be damned. Virtue signaling a la destructiveness. Found their calling

Sometimes the rumor mills are correct.....
Tesla Canada says its shady $43 million incentive grab was a misunderstanding
Must be a world record; selling 8653 units in 72 hours. Didn't know their Canadian dealership had that kind of capacity....

FWIW: this is the same guy that claimed he could save the USA government more than a TRILLION dollars a year through DOGE.

Need to teach Trump a new word, "embargo." That will clean up anything not killed off by his latest word, "Tariff."

According to the follow-up link backlogged paperwork legally allowed them to dump tons of free money applications into the system. Notice it was competing dealerships, not the government that were bitching about it.
As for this "news" feed - wow LOL really shocked with Electrek. From their post:

It's creepy either way when media outlets stoop to editorial zing / low class hyperbole like Hitler or Libtards. Is it any wonder centrists jumped ship to the dark side?

Thank you Captain superlatives. Our nieces / nephews are in Toronto & they (2) recently bought teslas. Should have said hair on fire leftist extremists don't buy them. They are a minority (Tesla Owners in general) within a minority (woke virtue signaling extremists).

I don't think we can make any conclusions just yet, but it would be very strange to brush off such concerns as propaganda from anti-Tesla zealots, as the activities by those Tesla dealerships should definitely raise red flags. Sure, some were likely backlogged registrations, but the claim that just four dealerships had $43 million in backlogged registrations just doesn't fly. Remember, the rebate is only $5000, so that is for a whopping 8653 cars (as reported by the New York Times), registered in a single weekend. Tesla only sold 36900 cars in the entire country in all of 2023, so 8653 registered from just four Tesla dealerships in one weekend doesn't make much sense. Fortune reports that those rebate claims from those four dealerships represented 89% of all claims in the entire country for all eligible cars from all brands during that period.

Canada investigates whether Tesla wrongfully helped itself to a subsidy-fueled sales boom | Fortune

Certainly the government agrees this is fishy, because they froze that $43 million disbursement pending the results of the investigation.

Fast forward to April, and now there are parking lots full of brand new unsold Teslas. I'm thinking this could be more related to the tariffs than the rebate, but it certainly gives us something to think about.

BTW, Teslas sales in Canada cratered in the first calendar quarter of 2025. It was down over 70% from December 2024 to January 2025. Obviously, adding 13-22% in tariffs on top of the original high cost of Teslas isn't going to help sales.

Even if that was the case, a bit of a d move to hold back paperwork then freak out when you realise you’re gonna lose it. That months’ worth of paperwork based on sales. The other dealers only had weeks’ worth (or in this case, just the weekend’s worth). Pretty poor business model if Tesla can’t get their paperwork together and leave it in limbo for several months.

This is just an N=1 but one of the dealers who complained about Tesla was out $400000. That means 80 cars of backlogged paperwork.

For the Tesla dealers in this case, there were four dealers and 8653 cars, which would mean they are each claiming 2163 cars of backlogged paperwork on average.

I wouldn't read too much into it. This is just the defensive strategy their lawyers (lairs) came up with to defend their clients (dealerships). They're probably currently negotiating terms of fine (settlement, depending on strength of gov't case), no-wrong-doing, and a NDA; so no-ones the wiser.

That's how the game is played - you get caught; come up with an excuse and/or blame others. Just like a child...... Unfortunately; business entities don't go to jail for fraud. They just get fined and/or lost of business license. Then they just spring back up under a new name and ownership title.

Sorry for the 'downer' in advance....

    There appears to be lean times ahead, but 2024's profits will likely hold them over till musk gets out of helping the feds rain in obscene deficits;

In 2025, so far it's F Series, RAV4, Corolla, CRV, Camry, Sportage, and then Model Y.

Also, it should be noted that in 2024, almost half of Tesla's profits didn't actually come from selling cars. They came from carbon credits.

    Screenshot 2025-04-29 at 9.11.21 PM.png

And the rest of Tesla's profits can be accounted for by just the EV rebates. Actually, without the carbon credits, Tesla would effectively be operating at a loss of $189 million in 2025 Q1 even despite having those EV rebates helping them out.
