Has the OP checked the VVT system? If the solenoid gets sticky it can apparently cause rough starts some times. Looks like replacing that solenoid is pretty easy and the part isn't too expensive. Certainly easier than pulling a transaxle.

Sure. But on other vehicles as the splines start to go there are often other symptoms. Things like difficulty shifting or funny noises. Then the splines strip all the way and all the gears become neutral. This car has a peculiar drive train so what happens on other cars may not be a good predictor of the symptoms here. Still, one would expect there could be some odd noises and rattles as the splines started to wear.

Yes we did that last year and cleaned out the filter there too wasn't dirty at all but gave it a go. Cheers. VVT gear was also inspected with timing chain and good.

It's going to be interesting to see what you see that's for sure because there's not a whole lot to see I've got a couple laid out right here that were rattling and shaking and various and sundry times don't really see too much.

Broken engine or transmission mount? (Grasping at straws here...)

I know I didn't really describe the symptoms well, might be why we are all looking for other options so I'll try do a bit better. To be honest I was looking for information on inspecting the damper not diagnosis for the symptoms. Not that I'm not appreciating it and I will listen if something new comes up but after a year and many miles and countless hours of reading and watching videos, really were only left with the transmission at this point.

So here goes, occasionally ruff start of ICE, not cold start but after hours of operation. More frequently than starts is a ruff stop of the ICE, something that feels almost like if you've ever experienced a slipping torque converter and the kick when it finally engages. Also it feels as if it's engaging the drive, even in park it moves slightly forward as much as the pawl will allow. In D with break held down at a red light it will kick if you will as it shuts the ICE off, again similar feeling to an auto trans slipping and engaging at incorrect rpm. And finally the rattle is rhythmic chain slap kind of rattle that follows the speed more than the rpm, this can be halted by stepping on or release of gas peddle. All above is infrequently happening as in weeks of no symptoms at all. Recently a new symptom happened. After 500+ miles run, run fine on highway, came to a stop at the border where I had about 30 min que moving slow everytime the ICE would come on like when I moved forward, can only describe it as if the engine was meeting some sort of resistance, much different than normal, like something was stiff like a bad bearing or something. After crossing drove another couple hundred miles and that hasn't happened again. Sorry for such a long winded explanation of the situation but as we are talking more about the symptoms and diag than the original question I thought better to be more clear. Cheers.

I changed the two engine mounts and have the transmission mount that will be installed while in there with the inverter out.

Yeah if nothing is seen which is most probably going to be the case I'll try a used transmissions and hope it solves it. I'm not going to open this one up looking just buy a scrap one and hope for the best. I can always put this one back in if the new one is worse or if the problem persists.

Yeah man this is rare as crap in these cars I mean from what I can see on the internet and the near 20 years of their existence it's been a serious outlier not very many people have been snatching transmissions out of these things. So the odds of you taking one out of another car and it being in quite good shape are very high on the scale even if it's in the junkyard it's probably not there for anything to do with the driveline usually the battery or the brake actuator puts these cars in the junkyard or a blown engine or a wreck of course again sheds no light on the transmission. Like most of said usually when this business is going on we're looking at the engine mostly but you've done that so there you go

I do not remember reading that description of problems way back here wherever it is I just read the one you put up three posts back or whatever it is and that sounds like something is a Miss in the tranny I think you might be nailing this one pretty well
