I finally had an opportunity to drive a Prius optioned with a digital rear view mirror. The first thing I noticed was the resolution wasn't to a level I would call impressive but it got the job done easily enough.

The second thing I noticed is, when driving and looking at the road ahead then taking a glance at the rear view mirror I was having to re focus my eyes to see detail on the mirror screen. That will take some getting used to. Using my peripheral to see objects behind me was no problem.

Any tips or trick for using the DRVM?

Don't. If you flip the tab on the bottom, it becomes a standard auto-dimming mirror. Use it like that. I only use mine if the rear window is obstructed by dirt, snow/ice, or a large object in the cargo area that blocks my view. Otherwise I leave the LCD screen off and use it as a standard glass mirror. (currently two years of ownership/use)

@Hammersmith can you school us on part number needed for a retrofit? I have this in another car and like it a lot. Is XSE already pre-wired, aka I can just plug the mirror in and a camera line is also pre-wired for the back?

Yeah that’s been reported here. Toyota must have also noticed this during its development, it’d be interesting to know why they persisted; it does seem to relegate it to novelty status.

like the back up camera on our ‘10 (Canadian spec Touring): it displays as a postage stamp sized image on our rear view mirror, super wide-angle too. About as effective/useful as the fog lights.

It isn't a Toyota thing, but one of human sight and mirror physics.

The image of the car behind you is traveling the same distance as the one ahead of you, Getting reflected in a mirror doesn't change that. So your eyes are focused at the same distance whether looking out the windshield or at the rearview mirror. Looking at a digital mirror means looking at a screen and an image two feet from you. So your vision has to refocus from long to short then back again.

Some people will adapt to this, and find the digital mirror useful. Others won't. You really need to try it out to determine which group you are in.

I think it’s magic, and it’s one of the main reasons i sprung for the premium package. There are flaws; it takes some getting used to, the resolution is not as good as a mirror, and the headlights behind tend to flicker. But having such a panoramic view, instead of the teeny field of vision out the window, is a big safety feature. Outward vision on the gen five is less than wonderful, but the extra cameras make up for it.

99.9% chance it is not pre-wired.

There are two pieces of hardware you'd need:
    1. Mirror: 87840-0W510
    2. Camera Assembly: 867A0-47020

    And five sections of wiring:
    1. Power wires to Roof Harness
    2. CANBUS communication wires to Mirror
    3. Different Roof Harness
    4. Different Floor Harness
    5. Different Hatch Harness

I'd say the single biggest problem is that Toyota uses a special connector and wire for camera feeds. They don't sell the connectors as separate parts, and every single connector is slightly different so the assembly line can't mix things up when plugging in a half dozen different connectors that would otherwise look identical.

The only way I'd even consider doing something like this OEM would be to get the parts from a salvaged car with the cutoff wiring still attached. Then you could try to splice in a new shielded 5-conductor wire to the two existing ends and run that between the camera and mirror.

Personally, I'd go with a quality aftermarket setup for this particular case. You can probably find a digital mirror from the same company that makes the one Toyota uses(but with generic connectors), then mount a good quality camera with the same connectors and wire them together. The mirror might even come with the camera they want you to use.

    The different wiring harnesses:
(this is just USA and just XSE)

    Wire, Roof, No. 1
    82171-4E540 - no options
    82171-4E560 - Panoramic Roof
    82171-4E580 - Digital Inner Mirror
82171-4E600 - Panoramic Roof, Digital Inner Mirror

    Wire, Floor
    82161-4FE70 - no options (until 04/23)
    82161-4FE71 - no options (after 04/23)
    82161-4FE80 - Panoramic View Monitor (until 04/23)
    82161-4FE81 - Panoramic View Monitor (after 04/23)
    82161-4FG80 - Solar Roof (until 04/23)
    82161-4FG81 - Solar Roof (after 04/23)
82161-4FG90 - Solar Roof, Panoramic View Monitor (until 04/23)

    Wire, Back Door, No. 1

The iF International Design Forum gave Mio MiVue two awards one in 2023 and again 2025 for their digital rearview mirrors. The only one I can currently find available in the USA is the Mio MiVue R850T available on eBay here for $600 which got the award in 2023. Does anyone on this forum have any experience with this brand or model? To me it seems like one of the more attractive options for an aftermarket solution.

One other option I am considering now that I have Starlink and a router in my car is putting an ip camera on my Thule Caprock rack once I get it installed to give me a better view of what is behind me. I can than view it on my phone via a local network connection. If I do it I am planning on powering by my Anker Solix I keep in the car thus avoid having to tap into car wiring for power or streaming. I am curious to hear if anyone is familiar with such an approach or has any first hand experience.

Due to Cataract surgery in both eyes I have fixed vision and wear tri-focals.
The top portion of my glasses is set to infinity which is perfect for forward and (non digital) rear view mirror.
To use the digital mirror where I need to refocus to 12" is difficult just to have to do the reverse when looking forward again.
Bottom line is I don't use it.

I am not familiar with that model, however there are several less expensive models that are known to work well (from one of my other car forums). "Wolfbox" is well-tested, and I personally run a "vvcar" in my SUV. You can get either a "2 channel" (one front and one rear camera) or "3 channel" version (one additional in-cabin camera). They just clip on top of existing mirror. I have run this unit for over a year with no issues and know of friends who have run similar for many years.

I will go this route eventually for Prius now that I know OEM digital mirror is not a practical option.

    Benefits of digital mirrors:
    • I always have dogs in the hatch or ton of stuff and can never see out of the regular mirror and find a digital mirror a must have - digital mirrors also typically also have a much wider field of view.
    • The field of view is adjustable - you can swipe down and see whatever your towing more clearly. Priceless for those of us that tow regularly.
    • You can use the optional 3rd channel camera as a dedicated trailer backup camera, if you get creative with where you mount it. That is what I do on the SUV.
    • You can pull the memory card and pull clips/photos. I do that after trips to Colorado offroading the SUV to get nice action shots, very useful feature.
    • For those of you that share cars with a spouse - with a digital mirror, the view is always the view so my wife never changes the mirror and messes it up! You set the screen and its the same for everyone for all viewing angles.
'Dumb' mirrors are really a relic of the past. There is no downside to digital mirrors.

(before and after showing how useless the real mirror is, compared to a digital mirror)

Ok I did it. Wolf box G840S. Took about 25 mins to install. No tools. Interior panels in Prius so flimsy I was able to tuck the wiring into ceiling with bare hands easily lol

This is the only exposed wiring you see.

Comes with a front dashcam. My car has the OEM dashcam so this is not useful to me except to pull stills from scenic drives.

My digital rearview camera, was new in the brightest position. After I set the brightness and contrast much lower, I had no more problems with seeing.
Also at night you have less trouble with the headlights of cars driving behind you.

Polaroid sunglasses are also best for looking at the DRVM.

Here is a reddit post with lots of pics from someone that installed Toyota OEM digital rear view mirror on a highlander 10 months ago.
