Why did Toyota changed instruments location and to analog

Good thing about Prius instruments was it was always easy to read and switch between MPH and kmph. It's central far location was perfect for someone using distance and reading glasses.

With Gen 5, I noticed that Toyota has switched to Corolla and Honda style analog instruments with a small digital display behind the steering wheel. The information is so difficult to find and it's very difficult to read for someone needing vision glasses even while wearing glasses. The reduced distance between eye and instrument makes it harder to read and find the required information.

I recommend Toyota to revert back to original Prius digital type instrument and the central location starting Gen 6.

I believe this display isn't has close as typical ones in front of the driver. It may not be as bad.

I have multi focal lenses for this specific problem, but I have it with all cars

It was in serious doubt that they were going to move forward with Gen 5 Prius. And based on sales volume the odds of Gen6 happening in a few years are slim to none. It's the end of the line for Prius as far as I can tell. The hybrid system has been integrated into most other vehicles they sell already, so there's no longer a need to sell a Prius that's becoming less and less popular year over year.

What analog? Has the OP even looked at a 2023+ Prius gauge screen? Because what they're describing is nothing like it.

with the line between regular and bifocals? Or with the gradual transition that kind of has a blurry line between them?

The unusual physical-pop-up display in Gen 5 was experimental and will no longer be used in any redesigned Toyotas.

With the debut of Arene, all current Toyota models suddenly have become outdated if not obsolete. The Arene-equipped RAV4 will be available in the fall and the Arene-equipped Corolla will be available next year or so.

It is behind the steering wheel, quite far behind it. It is not analog.

People with presbyopia will be unable to focus at very close objects. A Corolla dash will be a bit fuzzy unless I wear bifocals, but a Prius instrument cluster is clear. I've read that this was a nod to an older population, but that seems unlikely inasmuch as a car for old people would be a lot easier to get into and out of.

i'm sorry, they are progressives. hey, i'm 70, i don't remember what i had for breakfast.

when i had cataract surgery, they changed me from lifelong nearsightedness to farsightedness. now that took some getting used to.

Yet, it is in the new C-HR.

As pointed out, a typical dash has the display too close for those with reduced close up vision. Even those who don't have a problem reading it do take time to refocus on the dash, and then refocus back on the road. There are a limited number of solutions to this near and far vision conflict.
    • Central mounted displays well, it just often gets panned for aesthetics.
    • Have displays at the base of the windshield(gen2 Prius). Works, but limited space may mean the need for a traditional display elsewhere.
    • HUD can help, but is a supplement to the regular display.
    • Mount the display between base of the windshield and typical display location. The pop up in the gen5 Prius and Toyota EVs is just a styling choice. It can be mounted in a more blended design, which seems to be what Toyota is doing with other new models.

The bolt has a pretty nice display setup.
Drivers display between the upper steering wheel spokes and large central display for maps and other information

How come? One of the biggest things about Arene is the new, improved dash displays.

Across all grades, a new, standard 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster will give drivers customizable options and integrated multimedia information. A head-up display will be available on the Limited (HEV) and XSE (PHEV) grades.

    <sigh>

How about we stop the cycle of:

    1. Toyota announces new system/option/car coming soon.
    2. Posters spend next 6 months hyping how great the new thing is going to be without any solid knowledge of what it really is.
    3. Toyota introduces the new thing and people finally get details.
    4. Posters are inevitably disappointed because it doesn't match their unrealistic expectations.
    5. Posters spend the next year loudly announcing how much Toyota sucks now.
    6. Repeat.

Here are my predictions about Arene:
    - some things about it are going to be good
    - some things about it are going to be annoying
    - it's going to be much more an incremental change than a revolutionary one(this is Toyota we're talking about, after all)
