but my real question is, what happened to the op, and why isn't defending her statement?

It (the new operating system) will certainly be a lot better than what Toyota has now, which ranks near the bottom among all car makes.

What will certainly be better and was grossly needed is that TSS/LSS will now receive over-the-air (OTA) updates, constantly improving the self-driving features.

Note that currently (as of the all-new RAV4), Arene will only interface with the ADAS and cockpit. So, things like a buggy 12-V battery management system (BMS) as in Gen 4 and Gen 5 Prius/Prius Prime will unfortunately still not receive OTA updates.

RAV4 is already the best-selling non-pickup-truck vehicle in the US. It will likely be the best-selling vehicle in the US with the new generation. And it is EV-only this time. So, this is huge news.

The new RAV4 looks great - I need to start saving my pennies!

There will be at least one significant improvement for me:

“The new system changes-up the user experience with a new home button that is always displayed regardless of whether it’s being operated in the native system, Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.”

Will it be mounted far enough back to address the OP's and others' concerns regarding focus with near vision? That is the reason for the Prius and EV pop up cluster and central mounted ones of other models.

I see the same-old, with heat/vent controls relegated to a thin band at bottom of a touch-screen.

    Those problems are also relative.

I'm a refugee from euro brands that treated me like a beta tester for their half-baked tech. Some of the charm of Toyota was that it was a step behind, but it worked better.

Over the air updates to the software of my car? Pass.

Arene uses a larger cockpit display.

That is the multimedia display. The gauge display is back to the normal position.

EV-only as in HEV and PHEV. There is no BEV RAV4.

You're talking to a guy who considers this the "normal position"

That is too modern. My 1985 Corolla LE that I drove for almost 24 years had sliding controls like this:

Controls you could use without going off-road. (y)

That must be why newer cars also come with self-driving. LOL

Larger doesn't help for those that have trouble focusing on it.

If a larger display makes the characters and icons larger, yes. In Gen 5 Prius, the characters and icons are very small on the gauge display.

The Arene gauge display is also customizable. It might allow you to change the screen resolution to better fit your eyesight.

Across all grades, a new, standard 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster will give drivers customizable options and integrated multimedia information.

A large character will be more easily interpreted out of focus, but it's still out of focus. The inability to focus can be oddly non-linear too. When you see a geezer holding the menu out at full arms length, he may be seeing pretty sharply at that distance.

If there aren't any buttons, like an odometer reset button, located amongst the instruments, there's no real disadvantage to sticking the cluster far forward -- almost into a head up position. It's fewer degrees away from the road ahead with less shift in focus to see.

Yes we are used to instruments just behind the wheel, but that convention was born when the windscreen was much closer and there really wasn't anywhere else to place them. In my old Porsche, I could touch my windscreen, by just extending my finger with my hand on the wheel.

All these touch screen controls depend heavily on vision. Vision is a precious commodity for safe operation of a car. Go back a few decades, cars’ fundamental heat/vent controls were largely tactile, and with familiarity all adjustments could made without taking one’s eyes off the road.
