Based on that article: 1st Gen: N/A 2nd Gen: Average J.D. Power Quality and Reliability Rating: 88.3 3rd Gen: 86.8 4th Gen: 82.5 5th Gen: N/A
the problem is, we look at the mechanics and electronics. they look at nhtsa complaints. both are limited in scope. summerizing that prius overall are not toyotas most reliable model is based on what?
Even when the engine does not burn oil I can't get a catalytic converter to last worth a darn. Seems like everything on the turd gen takes a crap. Still more reliable than an American car but not typical reliability for a Toyota
My anecdotal data: Gen1: Bought new, ran it for 220K miles over 20 years and had only $2,500 in non-scheduled maintenance. Two hybrid pumps, 1 radiator. Gave it away in 2023 still running. I think one factory recall. Gen3 (wife's car): Bought new, 11 years old and so far NOTHING has broken, just scheduled maintenance. I think two factory recalls. Still going. Gen5 (2023, 35K miles): 12 volt battery, but I completely drained it with a ham radio tied right to it, so share guilt. As we know here, two factory recalls so far. Jury clearly out still. It had a high bar to live up to. Kinda like my picture, a shot of all 3 cars before a gave away toe Gen1. Will
I guess I've aged into a gen 5 Prius. I've sold my Corvette and Cayman, and now have the Prius and a Highlander hybrid.
I wish my C5 6spd were as reliable as a Toyota. I gotta do a harmonic balancer job I've been putting off and a pan gasket
I had a sports car when I got my first Gen 2 Prius in 2006 and I started the "pulse and glide" strategy on both cars. My wife had to remind me I was driving too slow with the sports car!
Yeah, I'd call that "report" pretty lame. "Cracking windshield?" I've never heard anyone say that and the author doesn't know about the 3rd Gen EGR issue? Our family has a history of owning Toyota's since the late-70's when my father-in-law replaced his mid-70s Dodge (I think it was an Aspen) with a Toyota Corona. Dad was a union man but that Dodge was so bad he couldn't talk about it without cussing up storm...had to be in the shop for warranty work within months of buying it and he said the whole family was scared to go anywhere in it because they were afraid it wouldn't start...and that was in the first year of buying it! Anyway, the light-blue Corona had a powerful in-line 6-cylinder and was indestructible....given to my sister-in-law and then to her daughter...had over 300,000 miles, and 25-years, before the salt roads in New England did her in. So our big family has owned almost every model of Toyota's since the late-70's and are of the opine that only two things can kill a Toyota...a car accident, and rust! Dad had no respect for American auto makers...said their only goal was to make as much profit as possible. Looking at the cheap PLASTIC stuff in my friend's Ford Maverick engine bay and my other friend's Ford F-150 truck makes me wonder if it'll be needing a lot of work in around 6-8 years....I don't worry about any Toyota's that way. (Much better quality of plastics, IMHO.) But even Toyota quality has slipped, I think everyone is seeing that. Just like how appliances made in the 60's and 70's seemed to last forever, new appliances are lucky to see 5-years without issues. Cars seem to be made not to last 20-years but more like 8-10. ("Lifetime" fluid just means around 10-years...so automakers think the life of a car is 10-years??)
