Ferdinand Porsche established Porsche in 1931. He did not want his name on volkswagen, hence the a different company that he designed the beetle for the german government. I'm sure he didn't want his name on a company that used slave labor. His son Ferdinand Ferry Porsche designed the 356, porsche's first sports car and started manufacturing in 1948. He also designed the 911. long before the beetle and volkswagon Ferdinand worked for Lohner-Werke. Lohner thought gasoline engines were too loud and first had this as a BEV, but porsche added a gasoline engine to charge the batteries giving it more range and creating the first gasoline/electric hybrid around 1900. Engines improved after that and hybrids faded for almost a century.
