    Gen1 community!

I have a 2002 with the OEM nav package and 85K miles that's having a really weird issue with the controls/displays. Car starts, runs, and does all the right Prius stuff (instant low-end torque, will run pure electric, shuts off at lights, not revving high for no reason.) 12V tests well and isn't low (vehicle gets driven once about every month, is on a battery maintainer the rest of the time.)

The multi display intermittently just goes black, and takes a few minutes to recover. After it recovers, the integrated navigation system does not work (MAP/DEST/MENU buttons don't respond, the audio system doesn't even make confirmation beeps for those buttons, and the display doesn't even say "external device not connected", it just doesn't do anything.)

The energy monitor will show if I press INFO, but it doesn't show where the power is going, and there's no outside temperature display. The "consumption" screen reset, and now it just shows 99.9. The Instant MPG bar doesn't move (it just shows 100 while I'm moving, and 0 while stopped.)

None of the audio controls work unless I am playing a CD in the changer. Even then, the only button that works is AUDIO (switch between audio screen and energy monitor.) Not even the volume control works, and I can't turn the audio system on or off.

"km/h MPH", "ODO/TRIP", and the hazard light switch work fine. The climate control also works fine, and it appears to talk to the hybrid system like it should (if I turn the defrost on, the engine will kick on.)

OBD scanner shows no diagnostic trouble codes, but I will get an intermittent MAIN battery light on the multi-display. However, as I mentioned before, the vehicle seems to run fine (it will run on EV, and it has instant torque, it doesn't seem like the problem is the main battery.)

All signs (except the fact that I don't have any OBD codes) point to some sort of catastrophic network failure. Has anyone else had this problem who can help me out?

    Thanks in advance.

Maybe the screen is going out - they do that a lot as these cars get older. Nothing to be done about it unless you want to break the plastic center bezel around the entire communications center and AC vents. Almost impossible to remove that bezel without it breaking. If it's already broken, maybe you don't care busting it up more. In which case you might search the dismantlers for a used screen.

After briefly going blank, the screen works fine, gets plenty bright, and responds to touch. None of the physical buttons work (the touch buttons for Consumption/Energy work). If I'm playing a CD in the changer, the touchscreen buttons for forward/back/disc all work. I can't adjust the radio volume, and the AM/FM buttons don't work.

Yeah, before they go out completely, they go out intermittently. Some times they work, other times not. I found that they were more likely to work after the car warmed up. Start up, blank, drive for a while, turn off and start again, and it would often work. Eventually they stop all the time. Never had one lose partial functionality though.
