I had a P0171 code that I thought was the MAF sensor. After cleaning it with MAF cleaner, it still had the code. Checking the intake air temperature, I observed that the temperature appeared to skew higher, even when the engine was never run, the longer the MAF was powered on. Obviously bad IAT sensor on the MAF could cause the lean condition since the ECU would not know the correct air density, so I replaced it. The P0171 still returns intermittently however. I've checked the MAP sensor values while running at idle and high RPMs and it always settles around 30-33 kPa, which my understanding suggests there's no leak. The fuel trim, however, is averaging close to 35% which seems really high. Should I smoke test for a vacuum leak, or figure out the rig to do the PITA fuel pressure test? Thank you.
At high mileage fuel pumps for this type of Toyota EFI system can be had for 35 to 60 bucks seriously. take about an hour to change . If there was any question I would have been changing it a while ago. Just for the cost and elimination at least you have that option in this model
Yes, do the smoke test to check for a vacuum leak. Take a look at this thread. https://priuschat.com/index.php?posts/3588028 It could also be the fuel pump like you already suspect. A vacuum hose leak is easier to look for first. Then the fuel pressure test. Posted via the PriusChat mobile app.
