FWIW: Ca state law makes the "owner" responsible for the CEL. You can get around this by selling it as a parts car. Your still responsible on an "as-is sale", last time I checked. If the bill of sale states it's a parts car - that's your "out" w/o repercussions. Also; make sure you fill out and file the sale with DMV; so your not responsible for any violations from that date forward. I sold a car and started getting parking tickets; because the new owner never filed the transfer paper work. Took the DMV paperwork and tickets to city hall - all was good; my name cleared.
