Here in western Canada, I notice more and more, kids (with friends, siblings, family) speaking something other than English. French is very rare.

Getting back to my “18 oz bottle converted to obscure ml” gripe, this dogmatic insistence on specific units is maddening. I think it it almost resulted in plane crash once, due to a litres versus gallons mixup.

I’ve seen it a lot in my work: a plan layout for an extensive system of conveyors was established with a single northing/easting coordinate, and the rest, all the conveyor centrelines and intersection points, was set by bearings and distances. Absolutely accurate and unambiguous.

then, the onsite surveyors requested more coordinates, at the various intersection points, a reasonable request, they were determined and added to the plan.

then, an in-house checker deemed the plan to be “double dimensioned”, and decided to leave all the added coordinates, but strip out all the bearings and distances.

drawings were finalized thus and handed over to the steel fabricators. They returned shop drawings, and the buildings at conveyor intersection points had conveyors entering and departing at such gems as 89.9965 degrees, what we’d asked for.

and no one blinked an eye.

Isn't that a two-way street? A French Canadian friend, visits France - & the look of disdain when French Canadians fail to pronounce words with even the different accents seems to drive many in France nuts.

Can't speak for the French :p But if *I* go to a country, should be expected to know at least reasonable amts of basic language for said country -- how they react to my accent, is their problem. I've done my due diligence getting my point across.

Moving to, or living long-term / frequent-visiting a country... doing so 50 yrs... and still not able to read a power bill (a US-citizen relative of mine who constantly complains about not being able to read English whilst not doing anything about it), that's what I'm objecting to.

Nothing worse than waiting waiting waiting for that online part from a company that touts how fast they deliver, only to find out when it finally gets there days late, it doesn't remotely match what it's supposed to replace. Well, Maybe the Orange silicone seal color matches. Sorta.

So for now, get the compressor out, blow all the dead bees, the sticks, the Dust out of the expired one and then down to Staples office supply to do the return.

This one came from one of the several 3rd party Amazon resellers, "Vashen Auto" buying their stuff from china. This is why I often just go to Walmart or Craigen O'Reilly auto - so I can size things up.

Aw man, that hurts. Seems broken promises are de rigeur for anything offered as fast and reliable online tho... Scamazon's used it as a busi-mess model ~20y now. Almost like no one told the supply chain actually fulfilling your order, about these lofty promises

Well, let's not overstate things ... I mean, it clearly has the same kind of rectangular, one-corner-clipped shape ....

    on a different corner ....

Hey Zepp -- I got a '99 Ford Escort out of heading for the landfill 16y ago, up and running with RA. No they weren't the nicest components, and yes, certain other parts I made sure were OEM Ford (or OEM Mazda, as all that era's non-sporty Escorts were 323s with craptastic domestic 2-valve engines in them)... but about 8/10 parts were from RA.

Did I have to modify some of them (like engine mounts), because they looked like they were cast in a pit in the ground in the jungle somewhere? Yes
(with of all things, windscreen glue -- which gave me indestructible but flexible-enough mounts that wouldn't break in a year, for pennies on the dollar :p).

Were most of them perfectly fine, and still on the car when a drunk bashed into it parked 3y later? Again yes
(like the Moog ball joints, swaybar isolators, and about a dozen other parts). Agreed on RA... for certain things :cautious::p

I’m really getting ticked, by the proliferation of back bumper “bike racks” that totally obscure licence plates, and often turn/brake lights as well. I can’t recall the last time I saw such a rack actually transporting a bike.

It's quite a hefty fine and loss of licence points over this side of the globe if you get caught with one of these and no aux licence plate displayed, complete with a number plate light. Even a towball left on a trailer hitch will be enough to get a fine .....

One that took the cake: the car had a trailer hitch mounted luggage deck, maybe 18” by 5’, tilted up to vertical, totally obscuring the license plate and all the signals.

Just a head shaker, and very common here. I’m sure there’s a law prohibiting this, but enforcement is nil.

"Thou shalt not use diner slang for 'discontinue service' in connection with the president" seems to be getting vigorously enforced.
