How many years have you owned the car?

Do you have a long-term history of the work and maintenance done on the car?

What did the mechanic find and fix if anything?
Did the high temperature warning light come on when the car was overheating?

 

Is the hybrid battery original and what kind of bars is it at when this happens?

 

It is normal for the engine to rev high on a steep uphill, the kind where you normally are slowed down.

As noted in another thread, its most important to know what your engine temperatures are at that time, not how much the transaxle is gearing down.

Finally oil in the manifold is normal and a new pcv does not solve it. It can be minimized with a high quality $200 pcv line catch can system but won't solve current issues like rattling, oil leaks or poor acceleration.

 

The RPM won't go too high in a Prius, because that's all under the control of a computer that knows what the limits are. It might go higher than your personal listening preference, but that's a different matter.

 

IIRC, it will hit 5,200-5,400.

 

More so than the same Prius did on the same hills in the past? If so, you actually have a problem. If not, that's normal Prius behavior, as was explained to you in another thread a few days ago. Especially at moderate engine speeds, a Prius engine produces relatively low torque in proportion to the weight of the car. Therefore, there's no way the car can speed up a steep hill without "revving loudly."

 

Yes, the gen 3 engine HP output peaks at 5,300 and then drops off, and the ECU knows that.

A teenager might choose to rev an engine above that point sometimes for the sake of hearing snarly sounds even though it's less power. The power management control ECU in a Prius would think that was silly.

I'm very sorry that you read my post in that way, when I was replying to Higgins909. I was not replying to you in that post at all.

If you remember back in post #5, I reassured you that a Prius won't over-rev the engine. It just won't. The engine revs are under computer control at all times.

Higgins909 then made post #6 about the maximum RPM range the engine will reach, and I replied to that post, confirming that 5300 is the maximum RPM the car will use because power actually drops off above that point and the car knows that. The contrast between what a Prius won't do and what a (hypothetical!) teenaged driver in some other type of car might do was purely to illustrate that point.

That hypothetical teenager for illustration purposes wasn't you or anybody else in the conversation. And, after all, the point being illustrated was that a Prius just won't do that. Even in an alternate universe where you were a teenager and tried to over-rev your Prius engine, it simply wouldn't happen.

 

You may be eligible for free repair, if there's indeed a problem with the inverter. We still don't know how much it "revs," in what circumstance. To some degree is normal, even "without flooring the gas pedal."

Let us know what the dealer says and does.

The oil in the intake manifold is mostly delivered by the PCV system, and aforementioned effective oil-catch-can can minimize its return. Keep in mind too, the oil pool may just be portion of the total, a significant amount might blow right through, into the combustion chambers.
