Steering wheel swap or button remapping

The only thing I know for certain is that the car won't care if you hook up a steering wheel that doesn't have capacitive touch built-in. You would no longer have the option, of course, but you won't get error messages or anything. I went the other direction and installed a capacitive touch steering wheel out of a Prius PHEV(just like yours) into my Prius HEV that didn't come with one. It plugged in and worked without any problems or additional wiring or programming needed. So I have to believe the opposite is also true.

Toyota just realized they were accidentally giving me free access to the wiring diagrams and repair manuals and took it away or else I could tell you if the wiring was the same for some of the models you mentioned.

One thing to note is that if you go to a different style of steering wheel, that also means a different air bag. And steering wheel assemblies brand new from Toyota are stupid expensive. Getting one from a junkyard is pretty much the only sane option.

 

I would guess no. The Subaru BEVs are just rebranded Toyotas. Toyota parts, Toyota wiring, Toyota computers. Regular Subaru steering wheels are more likely to need Subaru wiring and Subaru computers.


I actually want everything to be OEM, but I try to be really careful about where and when I buy so I don't overpay. Choosing the right dealership and time of year means you can get brand new OEM parts for barely 50% of original MSRP. And if that's still too expensive, I try to find good quality used parts from a junkyard*. The only truly aftermarket part on my Prius after 15-20 mods are the pneumatic hood struts I had to pick up on Amazon because no factory Prius in the world has them. I've even thought of replacing those generic struts with Toyota/Lexus ones, but I don't even know where to start to find ones with matching length and weight ratings.
