Source: Anthony Fauci’s high-profile Senate hearing: what we learned | Anthony Fauci | The Guardian 1. Rand Paul’s ‘unhinged obsession’ with Fauci The hearing was centered around an assertion Paul has promoted for years: that the Covid pandemic began in 2020 as a “leak” from the Wuhan Institute of Virology, even as virologists see a natural jump from animals to humans as more likely. ... 2. Criticism of scientists continues Scientists have not witnessed Fauci’s compelled testimony – he only appeared on Capitol Hill on Wednesday under subpoena – without dissent. A group of 155 scientists wrote an open letter calling for the government to stop the “vilification and harassment of many American scientists”. ... 3. Paul’s frustration with fifth amendment Whether or not Fauci can successfully invoke the fifth amendment of the US constitution – which allows Americans to decline to answer questions that could incriminate them, without repercussions – became a part of the hearing itself. ... 4. Republican criticism of Fauci wide-ranging Republicans lined up to attack Fauci. The Wisconsin senator Ron Johnson accused him of covering up unfavorable information about Covid vaccines, which he described as “experimental gene therapy”, even after scientists credited them with saving millions of lives. ... 5. Criticizing science important for Republicans The Trump administration has invoked the “lab leak” theory to criticize past pandemic policies – even as the party has asserted that the end of the pandemic justified cutting $11.4bn state and local health department funding. ... strategic mistake for Dr. Fauci to plead the 5th. always best to tell the truth and let things fall where they may... President Biden has already given Dr. Fauci a Presidential pardon. Dr. Fauci lawyer did him no favors by not behaving like an adult- refusing to sit where he was assigned and refusing to obey decorum rules and keep his mouth shut then having to be physically removed from the proceedings- I give their clown show 2 stars out of 5. currently Dr Fauci's diary is published here and open for anyone to read and draw their own conclusions: Where Can I Read Anthony Fauci’s Diary Entries? "Executive summary "The complete tranche of Dr. Anthony Fauci’s pandemic-era diary entries was published by Senator Rand Paul’s office and is hosted on his Senate website’s “Reading Room,” where the files can be read and downloaded [1]. Major news organizations have published summaries, excerpts and analysis of those more than 1,000 pages — but the primary source for the full entries is the material made public by Paul’s office [2] [3]." If the primary files are unwieldy, every major national outlet that covered the release has published searchable excerpts and story-driven summaries: The New York Times published key passages and context [2], NPR and CBS News provided reporting aimed at readers preparing for Fauci’s upcoming testimony [5] [6], and The Washington Post and Newsweek published thread-length analyses of what the diaries reveal [7] [8]."
It was the same stupid, waste of time, expensive, dog & pony show as when Schumer continued blathering about "russia/russia" - Russian collusion & claiming, "we have the goods on him! ... but can't talk about it because it's so super secret" ..... all to obfuscate & deflect from Hillary's malfeasance. Then conservatives do the same thing with retaliation. Pathetically - both sides are equally corrupt, leaving a relatively small handful of good legislators. Then simple minded people buy into it, letting themselves get whipped up over the "other side". Is it any wonder, that any malfeasance penalty legislation, deliberate or accidental isn't punished by loss of all retirement?
Not worth looking but some of the flu deaths increasing amongst the elderly BS “news” are looking at absolute numbers per year which just happen to track population distribution, many areas have a decrepit population distribution (as shown) due to years of targeted groups leaving and targeted groups being shipped in as contractors or retirees. Americans are consistently older and sicker every year, the fan fiction writes itself when the size of the elderly population is always increasing
Seneator Rand Paul is a medical doctor who used to have his own practice - he is more a centralist or libertarian than Republican, he upset many of us here when he opposed President Trumps Supreme Court nominees and often refuses to support many Republican bills because they increase the country's debt. Trump lashes out at Sen. Rand Paul over opposition to tax bill As one of his constituents I can tell you he responds to us when we question him, has quarterly phone/zoom town halls and constantly sends out surveys to hear what his constituents think on issues. Here is what Seneator Hary Reed a far left liberal at the time (now days with the direction of the Democratic Party has gone he might be considered a moderate) had to say about Senator Rand Paul - the clip is only a one minute long: Harry Reid thanks Rand Paul for advice on eye injury
I understand that you didn't mean that. Trump was prosecuted in state court on the basis of uncharged federal campaign violations. He invoked his right in the midst of the pending criminal charges for which he would be tried. There was no sense in which the charges pertained to accountability for public policy. Fauci was before congress on the subject of his prior congressional testimony about public policy and whether that testimony was true in light of recently disclosed documents. The many of the questions would have been covered under the extraordinarily broad pardon he received from Biden, but that wouldn't prevent state court prosecutions. Both men were correct to refuse testimony where prosecution is a threat.
Considering that Paul has previously declared that Fauci should be "behind bars", and that the game plan here was to create any possible new thread of an excuse to hang Fauci on a perjury charge, it would have been a strategic mistake for Fauci to do anything other than take the 5th.
It isn't strategic, but the best practice is generally to make the government carry its burden without helping it. The plan isn't an excuse to hang Fauci on a perjury charge. If the newly disclosed docs indicate that Fauci provided false testimony to congress as part of a messaging campaign to gain compliance with proposed restrictions at that time, then perjury is the correct charge. Fauci refusing to self-incriminate doesn't keep the topic from being further investigated.
Dr Malone - one of the original scientists credited for participating in the creation / design of RNA vaccines was pretty much barbecued by the government & it's primary whore - the leftist media - simply due to his warnings / stance. He was one of the handful of scientists who complained of Fou'cheese' shenanigans.
Ahem, “taking the 5th” is not perjury. Rand Paul and his fellow Republicans had the same information before a hearing that has no new information. Their ‘threats’ for future referrals have no teeth except as ‘slap case’ expenses … sofa spare change per the Republican claims. It isn’t November 3d yet but I doubt it even wiggles the needle for the midterms. Independent voters who did not show up in 2024 are not going to be voting over six year old COVID accusations. Not with $4 gas and higher grocery bills. If this hearing wastes Republicans campaign time and money … GOOD! As Napoleon once said, ‘Never interrupt your enemy when they are making a mistake.’ Bob Wilson
Had anyone here indicated otherwise? It can't be a criticism of Paul that he held a hearing during which the witness refused to answer any questions, and that therefore the hearing didn't produce new information. He doesn't control whether the witness speaks. Senate hearings don't spend campaign money.
One aspect of the episode that doesn't reflect well on Fauci is that while he seemed privately intoxicated by his own notoriety, he said nothing about the necessity of tolerance of dissent as a necessary part of healthy public discourse or scientific inquiry. That weakness in the face of the hand in glove operation of privately owned media and the federal government certainly contributed to the public panic and government overreach. We would do well to remember that very early on in the covid story there was evidence that infection rates here were already high even as the story about Wuhan was just breaking, and that the health threat to young and healthy populations was slight. Docs who made these points were effectively muted by proxy. The resulting public policy hurt a lot of people.
Thanks to taking the 5th, this one won’t either. Macbeth describes life as "a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing". Biob Wilson
No, congressional investigations and votes for referral for contempt also don't spend campaign money.
They don’t make compelling campaign ads either … unless the candidate has more bile than sense. Meanwhile, ‘swing’ voters pay at the pump, grocery store, and checkout counters. Worse, farmers who used to have much larger export markets and farm labor. Bob Wilson
Indeed, and all too often. That's very much the opposite of Wilson's idea that the hearing wastes republican campaign money. It shouldn't be this way, but video of Fauci invoking his right not to self-incriminate doesn't make a bad campaign commercial.
Too many negatives to parse. Is this what you meant to post: I would like to see Republicans using heavily edited, Dr. Fauci excepts in their 2026 campaigns. Bragging about "getting" Dr. Fauci from the July 29 hearing is what Republican candidates should run on TV, radio, campaign speeches, and yard signs. Meanwhile, less partisan voters have their pockets picked daily by gas, grocery, and counter bills every day for the next 99 days. Add to that farmers with rotting produce who lost overseas markets and missing farm workers. At the same time, health insurance at $1,250/mo, medicine costs, and collapse of rural healthcare. For an example in Huntsville, an independent, quality Crestwood hospital system was bought out by the 'getto' Huntsville Hospital system ... now a monopoly. Several years ago, I had to protect my dog from a Rottweiler attack: I went to the emergency room at 'getto' Huntsville Hospital. An initial triage replaced the blood soaked towel with a quick wrap and told to stay in the waiting room. Two hours later, that initial wrap was soaked so when I asked for help, I was given the equivalent of a 'doggie pad' and told to wait. Another two hours and a second soaked 'doggie pad.' Feeling light headed, I went to tell them I was going to Crestwood and THEN I was admitted to an examination room. Now 'getto' Huntsville Hospital bought out Crestwood thanks to Trump/Republican "big beautiful bill" killing healthcare support. Bob Wilson
