Yet in the USA they also make it a necessity. So if you lose that privilege, perhaps due to health reasons, then you become a leech to the rest of society, needing everyone else to do everything for you, because there are no alternatives.

As far as upgrades go, I wouldn't mind having a remote start on my Avalon. The button-contrlled rear window shade would also be nice. And I've always wondered if on the highway if that auto-distancing cruise control would be handy. The map is also out-of-date and there's a glitch that makes it not work like it should and so that I can't listen to music.

 

That depends very strongly on where you live. In my region, greatly improved public transit and other transportation choices have helped lead to a greater fraction of households going car-free: 20% in Seattle, 9% county-wide. Within Seattle, while only 5% of homeowners are car-free, 31% of renters are.

This is far different than the time and place where I grew up, with no public transit anywhere in the entire state. There are some systems now, but still nowhere near my home turf.

 

In our area, I guess due to rising property values, many major retailers have moved from nearby, to ever further out, into shopping ghettos. New house construction climbs ever further up adjacent steep hillside, local amenities sparse. Our grandsons' (newly constructed) middle and high schools were up the top of a long/steep hill. Good fun.
