Saudi Arabia also wanted to highlight a new emphasis on protecting the environment by announcing the establishment of a $750 million fund to reduce carbon emissions. The kingdom will contribute $300 million for research into technology that captures carbon spewed by power plants or refineries and stores it underground. In addition, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar will provide $150 million each.

Oil producers see climate policies that focus on oil consumption as an unfair way to curb the use of fossil fuels worldwide. By financing research into carbon emissions, Saudi Arabia says it is seeking ways to extend the use of petroleum resources at a time when global warming could lead to changes in consumer behavior in Western countries.

“We want to continue using fossil fuels while protecting the environment,†said Mohammad al-Sabban, a senior Saudi government adviser on climate change. “What we are worried about is for industrialized countries to use climate policy as a pretext to discriminate against oil.â€

uh... duh? Ye cannet hev it both ways man. Serious, "discriminating against oil". I can see why they're worried, SA has done very little to develop. It's all about oil revenues. The people are going to go ape when they have to work because the oil money's all gone.

I really dont believe anything "our friends" the Saudis say

If they are so interested in saving the world then why do they still fund Wahabbi Madrassas which teach little boys to hate everybody who is not like them

The Wahabbi & Islamofacists want to take the world back to the 14th C

How is that going to help the environment ?

Oh, I know, after they behead all the infidels there will be billions less people to pollute. Yeah thats a great way to economize

You're too generous. I think they would rather have us back in the 7th century or earlier; slaves, abused women, murder on a whim, and all the "fun" stuff that troglodytes aspire to. They care as much for the environment as I do for coddling them, which is, to say, not much.

They're headed right back to the 14th C in a few decades when their oil production is shite. They've done nothing to improve their country, where no one works. I'll be able to hear the whinging from here when they have to toil to support themselves. However, we've got a hand in it and there's no denying it. The sooner WE make oil obsolete the better. It's something we should be funding like mad as it will only help us and make the world a better place.
