I understand the implications for the US economy are not good. But, we have every right to choose the vehicle that best fits our needs, and obviously that tends not to be an American vehicle. The cumulative result of all those individual car-buying decisions is reflected in the trade imbalance. How do we solve that? Do we keep people from buying Japanese cars? Cancel Free Trade? Nothing personal, Malorn, but the general perception is that GM does not make the best cars. To be tactful, their fearless leader isn't looking too good in the press, either.
what malorn wants us to do is continue to buy poorly designed, overpriced, american made products hampered by poor leadership, overwhelming labor costs with an obvious lack of R & D dollars... while paying an IDIOT an enormous amount of money to continously make idiotic statements thinking he can feed americans a line of BS just as his predecessors have done in the past and get away with it well, the coffee is done and being served and guess who did not get a cup...
When the United States trade imbalance is $2,000,000,000 a day can you really call that free trade? Do you think there is some dumping involved, government support, outright lying cheating, stealing and payoffs? Check out the countries we have a trade surplus with and I think you might think differently.
The US in 2007 had a trade surplus with the Netherlands, Poland, Singapore, Egypt and Argentina. Thats it. Do you wonder why the dollar is falling like a rock, we are borrowing money to sustain ourselves?
And if things continue to go down the current path your real wages will continue to fall. It is just economics.
Either: A) Americans want to buy cars that aren't crap, or B) Americans are deliberately trying to hurt the economy. Why, it's obviously B! (actually, if you're talking about GM executives, the answer really is B)
Toyota especially has positioned itself as being as american or more american(in the Toyota showrooms) as Ford, GM or Chrysler. Watch this ad and tell me with a straight face that it is nota huge lie.
To put it politely, the definition of Free Trade seems to differ depending on the point of view. The US pushed its view pretty hard, and if it doesn't like the results, well, that's just too bad. As for dishonesty, I'd be naive to suggest there weren't any involved, but $2 billion a day? I don't think so. Is that total trade, or just cars? Maybe if GM made more fuel efficient cars, the US wouldn't have to import so much oil. They might sell more cars, too.
Yeah, that's gotta stick in your craw. A foreign company stealing a page from your book and using patriotism. But you know what? There is no 'foreign' any more. Corporations have no such allegiance, and exploit governments to their advantage.
your problem is that you dont understand what a trade deficit is. why is it a bad thing? you post numbers and cry "woe is us!!" so what?.... whats the problem here? why are we crying?
A trade deficit causes a negative balance of payments between countries. Think of it as a huge visa bill that just keeps grwoing and growing, the visa company currently loans us the money back to keep our mess afloat. Think about all of the jobs that would be created in this country if that $815 billion would have been spent on US goods, do you think over time that would affect your wages? When the US was building all of the wealth that we are currently pissing away, we always ran a trade surplus, that is how you build wealth, kind of like a savings account instead of a visa card.
To me, this kind of shows what happens when you take an imperialist or socialist or communist country and teach them democracy and commerce. I'm sure the late Senator McCarthy is spinning in his grave with every "Made in China" toy/electronic device/pet food/trinket/whatever shipped into the U.S. What are the numbers for the non-automotive trade deficits? What's the link on the page you pulled the info from so we can go scrutinize the numbers ourselves?
Something doesn't compute in those numbers. Toyota produces most of their product in the US and has for years. I suspect Honda and Nissan, too. Is US production counted in the Import number since net proceeds are returned to HQ in Japan? Got a link to your source?
