The new rules are part of Environment Minister John Baird's plan to regulate 17 key industrial sectors, which include manufacturers of pulp and paper, cement and chemicals, as well as producers of mineral products like steel, aluminum and iron ore, among others. Tar sands will get an exemption, just watch. I'll be shocked if this goes through unmolested. I hope it happens though.
You'd think the tar(oil) sands would be given an exemption given their importance to Alberta's economy coupled with the fact that our Conservative Government would never want to alienate Alberta (their home base), but this is right from the mouth of our Federal Environment Minister. Apparently Alberta and the Feds came up with this plan together. “... The second big issue is the oil sands and we will not be able to make our targets for 2050, let alone 2020, unless we mandate carbon capture and storage of all the oil sands projects.†said the federal environment minister. I am both shocked and pleased!
Sounds good. To be honest, this carbon tax thing is probably better than UK's carbon tax based on g/km.
