They are, however, using it a bit more, so the effective capacity is a bit larger.

Yeah, but the new 2010 battery can give up to 27 kW of instant power instead of current model's 25 kW peak power, that's 2 kW more.

 

I've heard 2010 Prius is going to use same 40-80% SOC range.

Yes, I believe so, but the instant max delivery power has nothing to do with SOC range, does it? Am I missing something?

I seem to recall reading that in the Escape hybrid Ford gets more capacity out of their NiMH battery pack by widening the SOC margins at the upper and lower charge boundaries (80% and 40% in the Prius).

Does anyone know any details? Stretching the Prius pack boundaries to 90% and 30% SOC would give a 50% increase in pack capacity, although these end points probably move too far from the flat part of the pack voltage curve.
Maybe Toyota are just being very conservative for warranty reasons.

 

Not at all. I brought it up originally, and said "good point" to acknowledge that my answer was wrong in relation to capacity. Power output is still relevant.

The Ford Escape hybrid has active cooling from the AC system. But while the SOC range might be a tad larger the useful power is a bit smaller since Ford was very conservative. The Fusion Hybrid I believe has more power available.
