Australia has always been very restrictive about immigration. I imagine that affects their policy on visa requirements. Leonardo tried to get out the door any time he could, his whole life. Fortunately, he could not get out unless the front door and kitchen-to-utility-room door were both open at the same time. And on the very rare occasions he made it, I could always trick him into into coming back by shouting "I bet you don't know where the kitty is." He'd race back just to prove I was wrong, that he did indeed know where he was.

Actually, it's much easier for folks from the UK to travel/move to Canada and vice versa, than for Canadians and Australians to do so. Correction, it's EASIER for Australians to move to Canada, than for Canadians to move to Australia I've never undrestood that. Either Australia is too picky, or Canada is too easy. I'm guessing the latter
Maybe in some sort of poetic justice, an Aussie will be complaining about the "bitter cold" morning in Adelaide, and find himself visiting with me in January, at -40, with -60 C windchills I guarantee that Aussie will never again mention "bitter cold" while describing the weather back in Australia

Jayman we do get minus degrees tempratures in Australia during the winter, not -40 i'll admit. We do have snow in some parts of Australia as well, and when we say it gets bitter cold It does. The chills come strait off the Antartica. When UK announce they are in the middle of a heat wave, but the temp is only in the low 30's, we comment that you are not in a heat wave until you are in the high 30's or low 40's. I guess it is all relevant. The seasons are all messed up now anyway. We seem to have long winters, and long summers, with not much spring and autumn.
Joking aside, Australia (up until recently, I don't know about now) would not permit people of color to immigrate, or people without either a lot of money or a job in advance. Australia's immigration law was overtly racist when ours was only covertly racist. Australia went from being a place people were sent to against their will, to being a place that was very difficult to get permission to move to.
This is true! (It was called The White Australia Policy 1901-1973). The Australian government at the time ignored the fact that we invaded the country of the Aborigine, a dark skinned race. My parents immigrated to Australia after WWII. My father was a carpenter by trade. They paid 10 pounds each to get here and are affectionately known as the 10 pound Poms. They came over on a ship with 2 small children, my older brothers. My father never had any problems finding work. At the time there were a lot of other migrants entering South Australia. Mostly from UK, Europe, Greece, and Italy. Ignorantly they continued with the White Australia Policy until 1973. Now of course, they have their eyes wide open, and encourage migration from asian countries, colour of skin is not an issue, but as you mentioned other qualities are needed, like money and/or job skills. The current government have apologised to the Aborigine Community, but have a long way to go in reversing the damage already done to this wonderful race.

The similarities of how the Native Americans and Native Australians were treated, I think were conducive of the time. I don't know why, but for some reason White skinned people thought they were superior to dark skinned people. Religion did have a lot to do with it. People were brainwashed into beleiving this. This is a very deep subject, that we could talk about forever. I guess the bottom line is that we need to continue to repair the damage done to races that were badly treated. "Treat other people as you would want to be treated yourself".
