2010 Prius III with Navi I have over 4,800 miles and will soon change, or attempt to change, my own oil. I know some of expressed in changing their oil well before the 5,000 mile mark. If anyone has changed their 2010 Prius oil please let us know how it went. My main concern is taking off the cover underneath the oil pan. Alfon
2010 Prius V w/ Nav -two weeks old, not enough miles for an oil change. But after reading about the 0W20 in the manual I decided to call the dealer to see what brand they used (recommend). Service rep. said they "used whatever Toyota sent them". Not much help. He promised to look into it further and get back to me. I see that Mobil 1 has a synthetic 0W20 which I plan to use unless I hear otherwise. Around $6/quart.
I picked up a filter yesterday and will change the oil on Tuesday. I have and image of a messy job with the cannister.
To get at the oil drain plug and filter there are two bolts to remove. Based on the picture I have, that is a walk in the park. I do have a question for someone who has changed the filter. Was the filter easy to twist off? Did you have to use a strap to get it started? It looks to me like a strap would get it started and then you could twist the filter off with your hand. It looks like you could us a half-inch ratchet no socket required to losten it.
I haven't done the job yet but I have gleaned some information from this site and other Toyota sites: It's not a canister, it's a cartridge type filter. To remove the lid from the cartridge housing you need a 65mm 14 flute oil filter wrench, same as the Gen2 canister took. They are very common and you should be able to pick one up most anywhere, but I read that you should get the actual 65mm size not the 65/67mm size. The filter cartridge should come with a new O ring for the cap. The cap should be torqued to 18 ft lbs if I remember correctly. The drain plug is 14 mm and is torqued to 23 or 27 ft lbs, I've seen both numbers,it has a crush washer that can be reused a time or two. The torque values came from a Corolla forum but they should be the same. EDIT: Here is a link to a site with pictures of the Corolla. http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/showthread.php?t=244334
