I'm a newbie and just drove a Prius for the 1st time today and enjoyed it. I was a wild ride getting used to how it works, etc.. So, this car has a clean CarFax report, one owner, no wrecks reported. It has about 63k miles and must have the basic level accessories since it has no NAV or Backup Camera...everything seemed to work well... Dealer wants $14800 total for it, although is pushing the extended warranty for $1000... Kelly Blue Book is about $2000 more, or $16800 give or take a few bucks.. So, to me this sounds like a steal! Am I right? And, would you skip the extra warranty? I'll get 37k or there abouts of the Toyota Hybrid Tech. warranty, so about 2 years of that... From my reading it seems these are reliable cars so maybe the extra grand for the warranty is a waste? Any advice is welcome. Thank you in advance!!!
63K miles is a little high for a 2006 and for a base model. However, the price isn't bad. I was given $15K trade-in for my 2006 Prius, under 30K miles, package 3 with backup camera and SKS (but not after a big fight with the dealer). A week later, the dealer was asking $18,788 for it! I would try and negotiate - how about offering the asking price including the extended warranty?
There is another thread active around here of a fellow who is not finding buyers willing to pay his asking price of $14k.
$14,800 is not a bad price (depending on options/packages) but it's not a steal. In todays economy, I would haggle hard with the dealer. Is it a Toyota dealer? Try offering him $14,000 including the warranty in the hope of getting it for mid $14s. The dealer paid $10,000-$11,000 (they usually pay 20-25% under KBB trade-in) so you have plenty of room to haggle!
Thanks for all the advice people! Yeah, I don't know, maybe I can get it down a bit more tomorrow. The salesman was pretty adamant that he "already priced it aggressively", and around here this is a low price, but, yes, the mileage is fairly high.. All good things to sleep on tonight. I am going to skip the extra warranty, though...this isn't a Toyota dealer, it's a small "Imports" dealer that deals with used cars...they say they move used Prius' like this often, and in this area they are very common on the roads, so I think I'm up against the fact that they know they can get $15 or more for it, but it's worth trying of course!!
