If EBCDIC was good enough for my grandfather, it should be good enough for ... Now where did I put that key 026 punch machine ... Oh yea, by the ASR-33. Bob Wilson
I thought I'd ascii a question to get us back on topic...Earlier in the thread it was mentioned that ECO mode changes the cruise control response? I use ECO most of the time and Cruise a lot...I had hoped that ECO would change the throttle response in cruise but I can't detect any difference in cruise no matter which mode it is in (ECO Normal or power)...I'd prefer a smoother slightly less agressive cruise mode to use.
I agree the cruise control applies to much throttle to get back up to speed if you use the resume function (as most of them do) and the ECO driving mode makes no difference. I use the throttle to return to within 1 or 2 MPH of the set speed before I hit resume.
Agreed. I do the same. I would have liked it to maintain accelerations under the PWR zone, still allowing the driver to accelerate faster by pressing the gas pedal directly (for safety reasons in some situations). I would also like the cruise control in ECO mode to avoid regenerative breaking to keep the speed down. I have to slightly depress the gas pedal to avoid it when going down slopes. In fact, I would like to be able to turn off (dealer setting) the "automatic-transmission-like" feature that automatically brakes/accelerates the car when no pedal is pressed; giving us a real neutral instread of fiddling with the pedal to keep the HSI in neutral.
I have updated the HSI page, taking out the remaining "XXX" unanswered-question sections since for the most part they've been answered now. On a whim I called a local dealership and arranged a test-drive to clear up some last little bits of info; they are credited in the document and the astute will notice a hint as to how to see more information about that day. . Don't let this stop anyone from confirming/denying anything I've said in there, though -- I don't drive one of these every day, it's you folks with the eyeballs and butt-dyno and MPG figures and hopefully eventual real instrumentation that are really going to come up with all the good subtleties. . _H*
thanks hobbit et al. the Tao of HSI has been the most informative explanation of how to drive the Gen3 Prius and achieve optimal performance.
Excellent doc, Hobbit. I read it last night. A minor points, for us newbies: Following your advice to try to stay in the "upper half" (efficient engine zone) of the eco-zone on the highway today, I noticed that when using the "resume" function on cruise control (upward tap on lever), the engine generally went into the red PWR zone on HSI. So you might want to suggest that folks resume speed "manually" ("pedally"???) staying in the efficient engine zone, and reset the cruise control when you get to the right speed. Is this correct? Or am I missing something? May have some more questions later.
