Somehow my wife picked up a stone inside the driver front disk rotor. It was loose, so no noise above 10mph, but a tick-clang-tick at slow speeds. Tick when it hit the rotor and clang when it hit the shield. I removed the wheel, put it in neutral and hand-turned the rotor while pushing the shield to the inside. Once it lodged between the rotor and shield, then it was easy to tap out. No obvious scoring of the rotor. The stone was about a half-inch in diameter. This seems unusual, but I mention it in case it happens to you... Bill
Had it happen on an old Mercedes I owned. What you did was going to be my advice. Not a real problem, just a bunch of noise. The rotor is usually a lot harder than the rock.
