ARRG. The Prius doesn't have a CVT!! It has a planetary gear set that interfaces two electric motors and the ICE with the front wheels. It does put on a very, very good illusion that it has a CVT. /rant off
It has: gears - they need lubrication, not cooling, lubrication stators - oil mist cooling Bob Wilson
Are you sure? I thought that the G3 also had a planetary CVT like the G2. According to the official Toyota website, it states "Electronically controlled continuously variable transmission (ECVT)"
The G2 and G3 both have the same basic system, and in neither is it really a CVT in any mechanical sense of the word. Toyota calls it that because they need to use some term that normal people can easily understand. If they said "Fixed mechanical gearing with electronically controlled electrical power split" very few would understand that they were talking about a transmission. The "E" in "ECVT" hides all of the details. Tom
Gen1 had a tiny oil pump for eCVT. Gen3 seem to have an oil pump too (not sure if it is for eCVT) and it is gear driven. Source
I thought we had a long thread about this CVT thing. Besdes the OP is asking about Oil pump. Lets just drop the CVT or NON CVT issue. To the OP it is CVT so lets just not confuse him. And yes it does have a Oil Pump.
