Hi all, just about to take my GEN II for its first service... I am in Dublin in Ireland.. I really dont want to take it to Toyota as they will invariably monkey rape my wallet.. Whats involved in the first big service? is it something that can be done by an ordinary mechanic or is there hybrid stuff to consider here that should really only be left to a qualified Toyota mechanic? Regards Dave
thanks for that list... so i take it there is little to nothing to be done to the hybrid drive for the first 50k?
Nothing needs to be done to the hybrid system with respect to routine maintenance, except: - inverter coolant drain and replace: after 100K miles, then at 50K mile intervals - transaxle ATF drain and replace: I do this at 30K mile intervals, suggest that you do this at least at 60K mile intervals The main issue when using a regular mechanic is just to be sure that person knows how to make the car IG-OFF. You don't want work being done on the car when it is READY. At 14K miles, all that is needed is to change the engine oil and oil filter, and inspect the various systems (brake, suspension, exhaust etc.) per the maintenance guide.
You really want to stress to your garage to ensure the car is switched off and not left in Ready mode when they attempt to work on it. If they assume that because the engine is not running that it is off you could end up with a whole load of problems. Imagine them draining the oil with the car still in Ready mode - the engine could fire up at any moment and if it did with no oil in will result in an expensive lesson for them and a lot of hassle and inconvenience for you!
Good point!! Called my local Toyota and they quoted me €170 for full service which isnt as bad as I thought for a Main Dealer. I think for my peace of mind I will use them. Thanks for all the advice. Regards Dave
Save your money. You really don't need anything more than an oil change and someone to look under the car. Maybe not even look under the car if your the only driver and you know you have never run anything over. There's nothing to do. The brakes last 125K plus. The plugs last 100K. Maybe the one lone serpentine engine belt at 60K. Change the trans fluid at 50K. The tires suck suck suck but last ok. Mine are at almost 30K and wearing well but there so loud its ridiculous. Nothing to do. Unless you like paying the dealer $200 for an oil change. And do not fall for the 'Injector Cleaning" horsh*t. They'll pour a $5 can of injector cleaner in your tank and chage you $99. Buy four qrts of Mobil 1 oil 5-30 and the factory dealer oil filter $ 4. Take that bstuff to your local mechanic and get an oil change. It takes 3.5 quarts. My car has never seen the dealer yet and runs perfect.
