I want to add some independently controlled electricle devices to my 2010 Prius II and would like to know where I can safely get the power from? I'd be real helpful to get diagrams and photos if available.
The question is what kind of power? Switched on in Ready mode or "always hot"? Switched could be gotten from the socket in the forward section of the low-bridge console. Always hot can be gotten from 2 different places. See Judgeless post and picture for a red wire in the driver's kick panel http://priuschat.com/forums/gen-iii...ng-one-aux-power-sockets-live-2010-model.html or follow my mod for center console light and see the picture of the lower left dash panel exposed.
OK I see I needed to be more specific. The links provided I assume are for lower output? My load may need to be higher also off with ignition. I need to find a source under the hood to power 2 fog lights. Switch will be installed in the auxiliary switch field lower left dash. Deer see Blue so I'm putting some blue fog lights in the set of black vents on each side of the Toyota Circle Logo on the front clip. Maybe give it some personality. I'd like to know where to get the power from and the best place to pass through the firewall. There is a black plastic covered electrical box in the back right corner (facing the engine). Is there a place there to simply pug in a wire with a male or female end that has a fuse-able link? or an existing hot wire that could sustain an additional load by tapping into it with one of those clamp on splices? Or Some Other Idea I have No Clue of? Thanks. Matthew
Matthew, if you intend to switch the fog lights from inside using one of the factory blanks to hold the switch, maybe coming off of the large white cable (as shown in my center console project - lower left dash exposed) would be your best bet. I believe that cable has the maximum amperage rating and is controlled by a breaker in the under-hood fuse box. (I can't confirm this so maybe someone here can chime in). First, disconnect the battery or locate the breaker under the hood and pull it. Then tap into the edge of the large white cable for your new "hot" line that will go to the switch on the dash. Use at least 16 gauge wire. I would use a red wire from the white cable to the switch. The other lead from the switch will go to your fog lights out thru the firewall (sorry, don't know where a knock-out area is to do that). That line goes to the fog lights and the other line from the fog lights will go to a ground under the hood (any body bolt should do it). Note: this is general advice...I can't see your fog light parts and switches so proceed cautiously. Toyota uses "green" wires for switched power and white wires for ground leads. A red wire should indicate to any future owner that the lead is "hot".
Pardon me, do I understand that you want to add fog lights? In that case you might want to check this thread: http://priuschat.com/forums/gen-iii...43-2010-prius-fog-light-install-retrofit.html
Teakwood - thanks for that thread! Matthew, follow it and download the pdf which has some great shots of the area I'm referring to. They have also discovered other tie-ins for the power source (it's next to the large white cable I speak of). They also describe how to pass the wire to the engine compartment. Good luck.
Thankx for the advice. :cheer2: Other questions... 1. Is there a member(s) of this blog that is a Toyota Certified Mechanic ? 2. Where can I find Toyotas Policies about adding devices in relation to the warranty? I wouldn't want to void my warranty 9 months in. 3. Is there a detailed repair/service manual available (online or in print)? 4.Do you know where I can get a wiring diagram? I will use your locations if I can't locate one under the Hood. 5. Surely Toyota has provided extra (virgin) hot spots for adding more devices since they have so many add-ons we could order. I would think the wiring is already in place for cameras and side impact sensors etc. How do I find them? 6. Since the smart-key with door lock remote Locks all doors I would think there would be a simple switch or jumper to enable it to unlock all doors. How does it work? Thank you again! Matthew
1) Sorry, don't know of any here. 2) Look at page 14 bullet 5 of your warranty book. If your mod is not OEM, it might not be covered. I don't know about consequential damages to other systems if the mod is bad. 3 and 4) Try ToyoDIY.com, but it might cost you. 5) Check the pictures in the pdf...I think it shows the area for hot spots 6) I read a thread once where you stand in front of Prius with the remote and hold both the lock and unlock buttons together until you get a beep. That is supposed to change the remote to unlock all doors on one press. Do a search here to be sure about that. BTW, if you have a dealer added security system (i.e. KARR) THIS WON'T WORK! There's also a thread in this forum on customizing lock functions. Look at post #8.
