The tire symbol stays on now for some reason...I had nothing done but it just came on and hasn't gone away....Is there away to shut this light off or do I have a problem, Thanks to everyone. 2006 prius #7
The most common reason the tire symbol comes on is that the tires become low on air. Have you inflated the tires recently? You should.
If I remember correctly, it is a 25% drop of the desired PSI setting before the light comes on. So it is even possible that all four tires have lost enough air to set it off. I would definitely check the tire pressure before driving it again. Also, from what I have researched, it is illegal to disable the little dashboard light for the TPMS monitor. You can run the tires without the TPMS, but you can't disable the system.
When the light comes on, you have a problem. Either 1 or more tires are low pressure (they can look fine but aren't and your milage will suffer too), or one of the sensors has died. However, you can expect to get many more years out of the OEM TPMS batteries.
As Mario says in the adds. "CHECK YOUR TIRES"! Check them at least once a month. If you don't, you're gambling with your life! The TPMS light you see is a reminder that you didn't do this. Fill the tires to your desired pressure, and double check them. Press and hold the TPMS "set" button under the steering wheel until it beeps. You have now calibrated the TPMS system to your preferred tire pressures. It will alarm when -any- tire drops more than about 20% from the calibrated value.
Does it really beep? I don't think mine beeps. The manual just says push and hold the button for a few seconds and wait for a few minutes before turning the car off - no feedback from the car whether the calibration is done or not.
Sorry, the light blinks when you have set it. Bad memory. "•To initialize the system, press and hold the tire pressure warning reset switch for 3 seconds or longer with the power switch ON (IG). After the system has been initialized, the warning light blinks 3 times (1 second on, 1 second off). •During initialization, the tire pressure warning valve and transmitter measures the tire pressure of the tires, and registers the signals that are transmitted into the tire pressure warning ECU at a frequency of one per minute. The initialization process is completed when the signals from the 4 tires have been received."
 This is why gauges and warning lights don't work. Unless technology grabs someone by the neck and shakes them, it gets ignored. Tom
