I was wondering what the religious affiliation of Prius owners was and given that PC is a site frequented by Prius owners, was hoping some would participate in a survey of religious affiliation. eagle33199 suggested some language that would hopefully set the tone of the poll and since his language is much better than what I could produce, I chose to use it below with attribution so as to avoid plagiarism. This poll is intended to help determine the range of religious affiliations on PC. Please respond truthfully in the poll. If your choice is not included above, feel free to post it. Since religious discussions can very quickly get out of hand, please try to avoid them so this thread doesn't get shut down/moved to FHOPol by the mods, which would severely limit its usefulness. A simple statement of "I am a Christian" or "I am a Jew" or "I am a Buddhist" is sufficient. Please note that many of the broad religious affiliations listed above can be broken down into sub-categories. For example, Christianity can be further broken down into Catholic, Orthodox and Protestant, among other divisions. If you so desire, indicate in the thread which specific group you belong to under the broad religious headings listed above. Thank you in advance to all who participate. Hopefully I do not manage to screw up the poll creation part (first time for doing a poll thread).
Funny, I was thinking about doing this exact poll. I was going to break it down, "Agnostic/Atheist/Catholic/Other Christian/Jewish/Other" but then though "Other Christian" would get so much that it should be broken down further but couldn't figure out the best way to do that. Then I was thinking just making a thread without a poll, but then I decided not to.
Shouldn't there also be the choice, "None." It is not an "Other." It is the condition of not having any religious affiliation and cannot be properly voted on or posted as "Other not stated above." Given the option, I'd vote None. As the poll is currently constructed, Pedestrianism The understanding that we are all walking our own path through life.
Could have kept it real simple by having two options: 1. I believe in fairy stories 2. I don't believe in fairy stories
You missed two important groups: Jehovah's Bystanders and The New Reformed Druids. Jehovah's Bystanders are just like Jehovah's Witnesses, but they don't like to get involved. New Reformed Druids are very similar to Druids, but they can worship shrubs. Tom
Was raised a catholic I am a Deist. The books were written by men to keep certain men in power. If the creator wanted you to know something, you would have been born knowing it.
I went to church when I was a kid only because my parents made me. Now that I'm smarter I can't believe any of that crap so I picked agnostic, although I'm still not sure whether I'm agnostic or atheist ;-)
I made the wild assumption that "Pagan" included wicca, druid, pastafarian, Gaia-ism, reverence for nature, and possibly Jedi, as well. I embrace them all.
Wow, I never realized Agnostic & Atheist are "religious affiliations". Anyway I didn't vote since I'm not a prius owner. PS : Some consider Budhism an atheist religion. Some Hindus consider atheism a part of Hinduism.
I forgot to mention Unitarian/Universalist. There's a pagan shoot on that branch, called CRUUPS. We don't attend UU often, but really enjoy getting together with others that are accepting and broad minded.
The reason I am a Deist, is because I was also exposed to other non-mainstream religions... and that did influence what I understand about the interconnection of living things. I spent some time on the res when I was a young man before I volunteered for the military... I don't think the "White Buffalo Woman" actually did happen, but some of the rituals that lead to inner knowledge were events that helped me to realize that our forefathers and mothers do look over us as we struggle through the hell and chaos of life, and that time is something that we deal with in more than one sense. I believe my Grandpa, whom was a significant influence in my raising, saved me from a certain death when I was a young soldier, I distinctly remember his voice telling me to get to the left ... I was confused about that for a number of years, because of my catholic upbringing, and because of the words from the chaplains and priests telling me it couldn't have really been from my Grandpa, but may have been an angel of god... My Grandpa wasn't a catholic (Grandma was), but he was a believer in the creator of all things... and in no small measure, he and I had a bond that remains today... I often thank my kin that no longer breathe air for the guidance I have received that makes me appear sooo lucky, to those that know me, while I am still among the living. I believe that creation as we know it, is but one of the times it has been done... and we don't have the tools to prove it, yet... I believe I felt the presence of the spirits of my family help guide me through life as I breathe air... especially if I call to them to assist me in the pathway through tomorrow... I also believe there is a general plan... the details are the chaos of time, which is all about opportunity attraction and spin... And I believe there are some spirits that are demons, like electricity... or or ouzo.
They're all belief systems and belief of the unknown takes faith. It's extremely humorous to me that some mock and deride others because of their beliefs and faith in an unknown, whilst professing their own belief or faith in an unknown! ound:
I almost skipped past this thread, but am glad I didn't. I'd never expected to find a similar point of view to mine... I've always liked Einstein's quote: "Science without Religion Is Lame, Religion without Science Is Blind". Although I was raised Catholic, after seeing all the trouble created through organized religions, I decided it wasn't worth it any longer. I've found it more rewarding to remain independent and tolerant on a foundation of solid values.
^^ your logic is lacking, Trebuchet. Do you "believe" in intelligent green ants the size of sherman tanks having an advanced society on Jupiter ? If not, is your disbelief more or less than my belief ?
