GE’s Biggest Electric-Vehicle Order a ‘Huge Step Up’ - BusinessWeek Winners: Nissan (leaf), Ford (transit/focus bev)?, Coda?
You could add Mitsubishi iMiEV, Think City, and even the somewhat suspect Chinese BYD. Honda says it will have an all-electric concept car at the LA Auto Show. IIRC, Toyota has hinted at an all-electric IQ. Just about all the European auto makers have an all-electric in the works too. I think the operative words are "to order." There is not the slightest chance that any of the above could deliver "tens of thousands" of EVs in the next year. So, it comes down to: * from whom will GE order, and how many * what will the contracted delivery date be. :noidea:
And so ... "may" being the operative word ... that also means, "may not". I remember back decades ago to my wedding day ... when asked if I will love, honor, cherish, ... what would be my spouse's impression be of my commitment level if I would have said, "I may". .
Just imagine the political and business pressure Immelt's comment must have caused. Nissan is currently sold out, so this may be an unprecedented opportunity for GM to save the Volt from an early demise.
If GE want's "tens of thousands," they will likely need to order from (and hope to bolster) all manufacturers of EVs (including the Volt and let's not forget about Tesla and Tesla/Toyota). Heck, GE could even "order" vehicles that are not out yet, such as the Prius PHV because it will increase orders and increase the manufacturers' desires to product the vehicles. I question whether the GE would buy the Volt. I'm assuming GE would only want vehicles that are 100% electric and don't require GE's budget to spend a single penny on gasoline. So, remove the Prius PHV from the list, but add the "future" Toyota/Tesla cars. THIS THREAD IS VERY GOOD NEWS !!!!
GE is a very bottom line oriented company and very image conscious. They will not stay in any business if they are not #1 or #2 in that business by revenue. I think this is just PR thing to project a green image of the company and self interest because they are planning to builf factories to manufacture EV battery. The tens of thousands of EVs orders will likely spread over the next five to ten years.
GE of course would be interested in promoting vehicles that would benefit it! A win/win for everyone involved, including the EV consumer! I imagine they will be purchasing a variety of vehicles that best suit the needs of the particular job, but it sounds like Nissan and Ford are the big winners since they will have pure EVs that fit most situations the soonest! And if they have the orders, they can boost production!
My guess right now is that Toyota has already privately shown the Scion iQ Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) to GE. There'll be a big, splashy announcement at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit in January 2011 announcing the Scion iQ EV and GE's plans to buy a good number of them for its corporate fleet.
GE, like it's ummm....."partners" will never go out of business. And you can bet that GM and Ford will certainly be providing a large portion of those EVs. FEDERAL RESERVE OWNERS AND HISTORY « Did You Know
there are also other articles posted discussing GE's links with BP and Nissan/Renault. it definitely looks as if those two?? companies stand to be in the proverbial drivers seat. GE Buying ‘Tens of Thousands’ of EVs | Autopia | Wired.com
