A ferrari is in fact functionally similar to a Chevrolet Cavalier, but costs way more.

It depends on the manufacturer. VW diesels (TDI) are $3K to $4K more than a base gasoline model but that is because VW only sells TDI's in the top trim level. When similarly equipped, TDI's are a similar price to gasoline models.

Mercedes sells diesel (BlueTec) and gasoline models for very similar prices. In some cases the diesel is less expensive than the gasoline model.

Well, Mercedes is pretty pricey to begin with, so I'm sure they can afford to not charge a high premium for a diesel engine.

I looked at the Jetta TDI when I got the Prius. Price difference was around $4-5k at the time. I wonder if they brought the TDI price down since they lowered the price of the gasoline one this year. Too bad it wasn't at this price last year, or I may have actually considered the TDI a little bit more.
