I have about 4600 miles on my Prius and when I started it up today, I got an oil maintenance required screen. Now everytime I start it I get it. Does this mean it needs it immediately OR can I wait till saturday? (travel about 40 miles a day at 60-70mph)
Since the next service is technically at 5000 miles, should I wait till then? We got harsh winters + highway driving which requires 60-70mph. At 30-40miles a day, it may take till around Dec 28th to hit 5000miles.
My experience is that the alert starts appearing a bit before the 5K intervals, to give you some advance notice. I'm sure anytime +/- a few hundred miles would be fine. Also--FYI, the oil/filter service interval is now 10K, but they left the alert at 5K intervals, apparently due to the other stuff (tire rotation, etc.) you're supposed to do.
Should I tell the dealership anything (make sure to put the correct oil etc)? I'm assuming I have to call and schedule the 5000 mile service?
so....when the 5000 alert message comes on, you should just ignore it till 10000, since the oil/filter are good for 10000? Geesh, the screen could be on for months.....
If you decide to go to 10k miles you can reset the maintenance reminder screen by: Hold down the MPH/kMPH button next to the Hour and Minute buttons on the dash Press the Power button Continue to hold the MPH/kMPH button until the Oil Maintenance Reset screen completes its sequence and your normal screen re-appears Release the MPH/kMPH button My personal preference would be to have the oil changed at 5k miles, again at 10k miles and then 10k thereafter. That is strictly my personal preference. The Toyota maintenance manual lists every 10k miles.
You really should rotate your tires at least at 5k then have the 10k service done. I personally changed oil at 5K (to remove and new car impurities) then took up the 5k tire rotate/10 K synthetic oil change regime. The 5 K remider just means rotate tires to me. Also if your wait to reset the oil reminder long enough the amber devil head will appear on the right side of the dash and that should really startle you.
As I indicated in my post...there are other scheduled maintenance items every 5K miles, so the dealer will reset it for you, or you can reset it yourself.
ahhhh, oh well, as long as you can reset it yourself after the first 5000, then you'll know the next 5000 you have to change your oil. I thought it might be one of those settings where only the garage guys could reset it.
I just had my 2010 III in for the 5000K service. I had previously reset the oil change reminder screen myself. Dealer rotated the tires, topped off all the fluids...did not recommend changing the oil....it was never mentioned. I would wait until 10000K for the oil change...why throw away good oil.....not to mention the money it could cost you.
I'm doing 10K interval synthetic oil changes, but not rotating tires. I'm not sure I'm wanting to rotate tires every 10k; not sure I want to rotate tires, period! Whadya'all think? Happy Motoring, Tom
If you rotate the tires they will last a lot longer. Front tires on front drive cars tend to wear a lot faster than the rear, this way the wear is even for all four tires. I'm not sure why Toyota feels every 5k is needed though? Make sure the caps are installed properly. TED
