Damn! And I had such a crush on him when I was a kid. Sigh. I guess he's out. And out. Don't you dare tell my husband any of this -- he believes I don't find Asian men attractive!
Sulu is one of my favorite Trek characters. I've always considered him a fine actor and he's got a wonderful voice. I think this is great . More power to him.
What really gets me about this sort of thing, and why I posted this, is WHO CARES?!!!! It's funny how the media sometimes just exacerbates something that really shouldn't be a headline. Granted, who Jennifer Lopez is currently copulating with is equally irrelevant, but by making a semi-spectacular event out of coming out of the closet, I'm not sure if it hinders or helps their cause. Maybe my perspective is warped, I live near Boston, and am frequently in NYC so the whole concept of alternative lifestyles is anything but "news"...
Well in my personal opinion it is a big event. Living in the rural midwest, people aren't so open to different people. When someone they have admired for years comes out, it tends to make them stop and think about their views. Anything that will open up the lines of communications is important. As a Dad, I have to live with the sad fact that many of my kids friends from school can't spend the night at our house because I'm gay. Kids don't have a problem with it, parents do. That is a sad thing for my kids and for society. So the more high profile people that come out the better it is...again, in my opinion.
I think that both perspectives are accurate. "Squidsworth" is accurate in that it shouldn't be such a big deal. "Legendary" is pointing out that we still live in a very "closeted" society where it helps to bring these things to the forefront. Fortunately, we have the current administration in Washington, D.C. which is such a strong, open minded, unifying force, both socially and economically who foster creativity and alernative thinking...
If being gay would make ME look like that when I'm 68, well... ...Squid! big guy!  No offense to ANYBODY! One of my daughters is bi.
"...has come out as a homosexual in the current issue of Frontiers, a biweekly Los Angeles magazine...." Ironic, no? Not that there's anything wrong, IMHO, with Sulu's lifestyle, coming out or anything.
Oh man, talk about a slow underhand pitch.... Anyhow, I just wanted to COME OUT and NOTIFY the WORLD: LOOK AT ME!!!! I AM HETEROSEXUAL!!!
This puts a whole new perspective on those Star Trek episodes. I knew he smiled at Kirk too much.... h34r: Come to think of it, what a progressive show Star Trek was: First televised interracial kiss, Sulu gay... Now if SCOTTY had come out, THAT would have been too traumatic!
Oh come on! Scotty was an engineer. He was caught up in a torrid affair with the Enterprise's impulse engines. That would make him a...not gay, or bi, not a pederast or into beastiality... A metalophile? Naw, just an engineer!!
