This took me two hours, even after following instructions from Vfaq's Prius light mods! I didn't even technically complete it, I'll get to what I mean by this later. Let me tell you what happened. First, I did this all without jacking my car up. I unscrewed the panels needed to access the fogs. I reached my hands in there and turned the bulb counterclockwise to unlock it. Now, after 30 minutes of figuring out what exactly I needed to pull out without trying to break anything, I pulled out the harness with the OEM bulb attached. "That was it?" Then it took me another 5 minutes to figure out how to release the bulb from the latch - "where the heck is the latch??" I literally studied the contraption turning it at all angles. Again this is all new to me and I didnt' want to break anything. Voila, OEM bulb was out. I plugged in the new Nokya bulb, went back through the hole the same way I came out, and tried turning to lock it. Didn't move. I tried again, accidentally scratching the yellow tip on my ways in and out, which I know I was not good!! Oh well what can you do. Then I decided to plug the OEM back in and practice with that, just to see how it locks in. It worked perfectly. I replace it with the Nokya bulb again and it still doesnt work!! I use all my force to turn this into lock position and it didn't work. Skin from my middle finger peeled off, I was pushing and turning so hard, but it wouldn't budge. So I tried the other side. No problem, I popped that one in within 20 seconds. I webt back to the first side to try a few more times. Still wouldnt work. My fog housing on that side must be tighter - or not, because the OEM bulb locked fine. So after much thought, I decided to leave the harness at an angle (in the unlocked position), which is what I meant when I first said that "I didn't even technically complete it." I wiggled it to make sure it wouldnt come loose. It's pretty stuck in there. I screwed the panels back in and that was it. Anyways, thats my story. Does anybody think that not having turned the bulbed all the way to lock it is a problem? Thanks for listening! BTW, the picture shows the lights as kind of amber - they are actually more green/yellow than that. FYI, they are Nokya Hyper Yellow 55W 9006 HB4 Stage 1.
Good job Mac. I swapped my standard fog bulbs for yellow ones when I installed the foglight kit I bought from this website: http://priuschat.com/forums/gen-iii...og-light-kit-now-available-5.html#post1132797 The Gen II fogs look a bit easier to access than the Gen III. Since you didn't secure the fit on the one side, you just want to make sure that moisture doesn't make it's way into the housing... you don't want a foggy lens in your fog lights.
Thanks HI. I want to update all readers, today I tried again to lock the bulb. What I did was have to replace the yellow rubber O ring on the new bulb, with the OEM O ring. It worked! Turned and locked like a charm.
mac, do you think the Nokya Hyper Yellow would be brighter than the OEM stock turn signal bulbs? I ordered a DRL kit that'll let me use the turn sigs as DRL and now I want to find brighter bulbs than stock. Thanks, Ryan
Hey mac, make sure you check on the wire harness everytime you do an oil change. After market color bulbs generally create more heat and electrical draw then stock bulbs which leads to melted wires and harness plugs. Back in the days when everyone was using these bulbs, there were cases of melted wires and harnesses that could lead to fires.
I can't believe you guys dug up this thread, lol. I was a baby when I wrote this. They're definitely brighter than stock. Yellower. Golden. Whatever you want to call it. The only thing you might want to be concerned about is the heat, especially if you're using them as DRLs. They get super hot. Not wire melting hot, but burn-you-at-the-touch hot. I remember reading about those horror stories when kids would put them on their ricers. I think I'm safe though - here's why, they're stage 1 (vs stage 2 or 3) , they're 55w (vs 70w+ previously), and I've had no issues after almost a year. Ironically, I actually feel better about the quality and durability of these bulbs than I do the LEDs on my car. Anyways, if anything goes awry (knock on wood) then I have a backup plan to go to HID fogs.
Ryan, Personally, I think hyper yellow bulbs will look really cool as DRLs, depending on where your DRL is (I forget what the kit does). It'll give your car that constant racer/rally look. Anyway, cool mang...and call me Matt.
Matt the mod uses the turn signals as the drl. My turn signals are in the same place as yours. Yes a search tends to dig up old threads but better than starting a new one.
Hey Ryan, so you probably already know this and I apologize if you do, but I did a quick search on Sylvania's light replacement bulb and the front turn signals use a 992/7440 bulb rather than the 9006 of the fogs. Luckily, Nokya makes this bulb and it comes in hyper yellow color, however obviously I can't vouch for that specific bulb. (You may want to verify the bulb type because I found nobody in the aftermarket world using 7440s on Google - strangely the [Honda, etc] people with Nokya DRLs are using 9005) Nokya 7440 Hyper Yellow Pro Mini Bulb Single Pack Part # NOK6207 Again, I'm happy you want to do this, because I think bright yellow DRLs look sharp. All DRLs I see are amber/orange, and I always think, that would look so much more fierce if they were hyper yellow. Here's an example of one I found on the net -
Amazon.com is my friend:http://www.amazon.com/dp/product/B004SLOH1K?tag=priuschatcom-20 They have the bulb in 7440.
