States test-drive hybrid school buses

The big yellow school bus is going green.
With an eye on reducing emissions â€” and the cost of diesel fuel topping $3.50 per gallon â€” eight states are testing 11 hybrid buses, and more are on the way.
Managing the project is Ewan Pritchard of Raleigh, N.C.-based Advanced Energy, a non-profit corporation overseen by the governor of North Carolina and member utilities.
Pritchard says the hybrids, manufactured by IC Corp. of Warrenville, Ill., get twice the miles per gallon of a regular bus, reduce some emissions by up to 90% and look and drive like a typical bus.
Tests are underway in California, Arkansas, Florida, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas and Washington, Pritchard says. Districts in Iowa, New York, Virginia and Washington, D.C., have orders pending
