LLC vs. SLLC Hi everyone. It has been an extremely long time since I have posted here. I was told by a trusted source that a 2004 model year Prius comes with "Long Life Coolant" rather than "Super Long Life Coolant" from the factory. I was also told that SLLC cannot be used on a car if there are traces of the LLC mixture still in the system. This is challenging my belief that a 2004 Prius comes with the pink SLLC (or at least that's the way it looks). Can someone put my mind at ease and reassure me that it is okay to use the pre-mixed Super Long Life Coolant? I am desperately trying to find a publication that would indicate a 2004 model uses SLLC. Thank you.
Your trusted source is wrong. SLLC was used in all 2004 models, not just Prius, as far as I know. I've never heard of a prohibition on adding it to pre-04 cars, regardless of make/model/existing coolant, but clearly the benefits of SLLC are not realized if there is a large amount of older stuff in the mix. EDIT: If you friend was thinking of ATF, as in T-IV vs ATF-WS, he's right, as far as Toyota saying that they are not interchangeable.
My '04 came with SLLC. My '07 FJ Cruiser also has SLLC About a month ago I thought I would drain a litre from the FJ to see how it was holding up. Looked absolutely spotless However, next year sometime I will probably go ahead and fully drain, then refill with the premixed SLLC
Thank you for your replies. I feel more at ease now. I think this person may be confusing the 2004 Prius with the generation 1 car. Any thoughts on where I can find documentation from Toyota on the subject would be greatly appreciated. Thank you again.
So, I've decided that a photo of my owners manual, which clearly says, "Toyota Super Long Life Coolant is used in your Toyota vehicle at factory fill. In order to avoid technical problems, only use Toyota Super Long Life Coolant or similar high quality ethylene glycol based non- silicate, nonamine, non- nitrite, and non- borate coolant with long- life hybrid organic acid technology. (Coolant with long- life hybrid organic acid technology is a combination of low phosphates and organic acids.)" That should do the trick in proving my case. Thanks everyone.
Toyota implemented SLLC in new car production for the 2003 model year, and issued a TSB to that effect. You can mix LLC and SLLC but the long-life benefit of SLLC (50K mile change intervals after the original factory-fill is replaced at 100K miles) is lost if other coolant is contaminating the system.
