So the other day my girlfriend got in her car and it had the master warning light on. we took it to the dealer and now they are saying it is something with the transmission and it would be cheaper to just install a new one. is that true? another thing is how could it be the transmisson if i drove it over to the dealer and head no problem with the gears changing? but he also said something about a voltage leak and that i could shock you. we desided not to pay the $4500 for the new transmisson and are just going to keep running it, ever once in awhile. is there anything that i need to be worried about?
Try changing the fluid first. Not likely that it would shock you, but it will burn the windings eventually if there is a voltage leak inside the transmission. If the problem persists, then look for a low mileage salvage trans. Since you took it to the dealer, look at your paperwork for the diagnostic trouble codes and any 3 digit information codes, such as P3125 code 287. Call them and ask for (if necessary, demand) the codes if they are not listed.
Your car probably has DTC P3009 which is a high voltage ground fault. This does not impair driveability, however this poses a potential safety hazard.
