My question is pretty specific. Yesterday I bought my 2012 Prius v Five. Very happy with car and satisfied with purchase price at invoice. However, I did what I never do, I bought the extended warranty, specifically 5yrs/60,000 mi for $1330. The dealership referred to it as bumper-to-bumper, taking the standard 3yrs/36,000 mi and extending it by 2yrs. Never owned a hybrid before and the high degree of computerization made me concerned. Upon returning home, my doubts lead me to read the info regarding EW's on this site. With tax, I am paying $700 for each additional year. I'd greatly appreciate the opinions of the members of this forum. Thank you.
You should go back and cancel it...you have until the 3/36 expires. Read here and you'll see what I mean http://priuschat.com/forums/sponsor...-extended-warranty-service-contracts-142.html
Having a 2004 Prius that had a major problem with the brake system (to the tune of $3k) and a damaged AC evaporator ($1k) within the last 16 months, and under 100k millage, an EW makes some sense (at that moment there was no EW offering here in PR). The only thing is that your EW coverage is just 5y/60k, a 6y/100k for about $1,600 would make more sense. The other option is to put aside at least $500/yr in case you need a major repair (which was my case; but still hurts on the wallet).
Said yes to the extended warranty stuff as well. And like you NEVER done this before. It was the 8 year bumper to bumper for $2K. Thought with the AT pkg. it might be worth it for the electronics alone? We are old farts and thinking this is a car we'll keep til the bitter end. Would we have been better off to purchase something at the end of 3 years? Figured we were paying $400/year after the first 3 years which sounded awfully good. Nothing we can do now after more than month, but interested in you experts take. Thank you.
