I need a traction battery that I will use as a starting battery on my boat. The battery should be good but doesn't need to be perfect since I won't use it in my Prius. I would like to get one for shipping and handling but would be willing to pay more to make it worth your time. Anyone out there have such a battery just sitting around that you would like to get rid of? Thank you.
You don't need a traction battery, you need a number of battery modules (7.2v, 6.5ampHours each). They need to be set up in a series/parallel group to give the desired voltage and capacity rating. You also need to clamp the structure so that internal pressure in each module doesn't cause them to bulge as they have low sidewall strength. Good modules run about $30 each on eBay and are capable of handling 100 amp surges (discharging and charging)) as long as they are kept from overheating. JeffD
Paul I do not think the Prius battery would be any use as a starting battery it has only from fully charge "more than it is in the car" to fully discharged again "more than in the car" about 6amp/hr at around 225v. Used like this it would have a very short life and how would you charge it.
