Just replaced my muffler for the second time. OEM lasted 3 winters and generic replacement about the same. I think it is the excessive salt on the roads here in Vermont in the winter. My question is: what is the proper arrangement of the bolt spring kit at the flange. It is supposedly for a flexpoint in the system. but the previous mechanic just slapped it together with just two bolts. 90K on a 2005 Prius.

Yes, using spring bolts is part of the design, because there does need to be some allowance for movement, vibration, etc. Probably the old ones were rusted tight to the muffler so your mechanic cut them off.
