First post here, just wanted to display results of recent rocker black-out. Used Rustoleum Textured Black over dark gray primer. Texture is very fine, and the black has just a bit of sheen, which looks nice. I removed both wheels and partially removed the front inner well liner, and a deflector from the rear. Washed the area with ammonia and water to remove the wax. Then 1/4 inch 3M vinyl masking tape (auto body), with the top edge at the rim of the door sill. This gave the spacing I was after. Then 1.5 inch masking tape row by row up past the door indent. After making sure all the tape was well pressed down, I wiped area with Wilbond to remove any grease and to soften the clearcoat for the primer to grab onto. (No sanding--fingers crossed). Welcome to the forum, I looked at your pictures, I think it looks really nice and clean. Makes me wonder why the Prius didn't come this way from the factory!
Thanks. I was hoping for a factory look. The little bit of black really makes the side view of the car a lot sleeker. I may add front mud flaps, but I'm still thinking on that. because
I agree the look is great, but why stop there? Throw a bit more paint on there and you've got yourself a Boxer!
if you were going for continuity wouldn't have been easier to paint the plastic on the bottom of the rear bumper barcelona red? The Berlineta Boxer is one of the sexiest sheetmetal ever fitted to an automobile (along with the Miura & GT40) so I hope you're not trying to insult Pinifarina with that joke.
My intention was to make the car look sleeker, or leaner, and this technique has been used by car companies on various models at least since the sixties. Painting the rear valance red would have made the rear end appear to have more mass than it already does.
