I've noticed a strange thing in regards to the 'Avg Speed' on the display in the Gen III. This is with a fresh, reset trip meter. If i start the car and let it sit for a minute or two, start driving for about 1 mile through the neighborhood at about 25mph, then proceed to the highway at speeds of 65mph for a sustained 25 minutes, then off ramp to actually parking is about 2 minutes. My average speed will show about 35mph. However, if i reset the Trip as i'm starting out, within 10 seconds or so of putting in D and actually start driving, my average speed will jump to around 50mph. My question is, what is the rate in which the car is polling the speedometer to make that average? Is it only when the car is moving? Every .1 miles? Every Mile?
I wondered about that, because I just did a tank with mostly highway and maybe 40 miles of stop n go. My average was in the high 20's and I couldn't figure out how that was possible. The idle time I spend stopped looking for bears, is how it happened I guess! lol
Yes, it is miles driven divided by time. The clock starts as soon as you hit the Power button and runs until you stop. It divides the miles by the time, whether you are sitting still or moving and whether the ICE is running or not. Try figuring out your average mph by looking at the different speeds driven for each block of time and then average them all together. If you do it right it will match the display.
Our average mph has never been over 28. The wife drives it all in town and the few times we use it for extended trips she's already run a bunch of in town miles.
