Well got the car about a week ago, and just arrived in Duncan SC. Before my trip I did a half tank fill up and with manual calculation I got 49mpg! Did another refill in GA a little more than half thank and got 42mpg. I know its not as high as many would like to see but considering I was strictly on cruise at 73mph, I think thats an awesome number. When I finally got to SC this morning though on rte 26 west its all hills and boy did I see my gauge drop. Im pretty sure Im gonna see around 38. I also want to mention the car was filled with 3 people and 1 baby, a stroller and all our crap. Im impressed once I get better at this pulse and glide stuff ill be all set!! Anthony
Set your cruise on 65 (or less) & you should easily get in the mid 50's Glad you like the car. Great feeling, isn't it?
If you do a partial fill the mpg result for that tank is less reliable so don't be too concerned. Basically, different pumps shut off at slightly different times. Since the shut-off depends little on the starting point the variation is larger with partial fills. So, you can't really be sure of that 42mpg, even though it's pretty good for a car in the USA. Oh, and welcome to Prius. Thanks for cutting your gasoline consumption. First just try to master hitting glides. If you pulse wrong you'll hurt mileage. Easier to stick to Driving With Load first: pick an average speed then maintain a steady demand on the HSI. Let your speed drop uphill (what hills you have) and rise downhill. It's not as good as P&G but it's easier. Similarly, when you hit traffic, you can find the average speed and maintain that. (People behind you will figure it out eventually and relax ).
Congratulations & welcome to our exclusive membership. Over time, once u get the hang of the pulse & glide, your mpg will go up & even if u take some bad hit on hilly terrains or just in the mood to drive aggresively, it will still average out to a good mpg in the long run.
agree. I do a 40 mile one way trip to work, 90% highway. I did about 65 on the way in today and got about 60mpg on average, 75mpg the last 10-15 mins of my trip
PSD is an amazing innovative technology. Generally speaking people complain about the look/shape of the car. I think it only looks awkward because of the goofy looking 15" rims and 65 size tire wall with the 4X4 gap.
