I bought a 2006 Certified used Prius a month ago and it was rear ended 2 weeks ago (uninsured motorist couldn't be more pissed) Well since the wreck the MFD screen has been skipping bars in the consumption category. It will just leave a whole space blank. Everything else it working fine. We took it to Toyota to figure out what was going on and they are saying that everything mechanical and electrical with the car is fine. They said the only thing they can think is that the MFD screen is having issues after the wreck. Has anyone ever had this problem before?? They are also quoting $5000 plus to fix the issue? It seems a little extreme since I had a friend with a 2007 Navigation version get his replaced for around $1300.
Basically they have no idea what is wrong and have quoted $5000 in the hope you will go away, and if you do not they have money to through at the problem "your money". I would be inclined to try a second hand MFD.
By "skipping bars" do you mean some of the consumption bars are blank? That is not necessarily a sign of trouble. Zero fuel consumption in a five minute interval will yield a blank bar. Tom
Where are you located? There are several independent Prius repair stations that can find and fix this problem at a reasonable cost. To show a blank 5 minute period, the MFD thinks that you have been stationary for 5 minutes. If you have been moving during that interval there may be an intermittent data connection somewhere in the system, JeffD
Yes, but zero fuel consumption produces an indeterminate number, which the Prius displays as an empty bar. Tom
That'll do it. It's one of the weird artifacts of our miles per gallon system, as apposed to fuel per unit distance. After an accident or other unusual situation, one tends to be hyper-aware and looking for problems. In such a situation it's easy to notice things that are otherwise overlooked, even to the point of thinking that they represent new behavior. Tom
